Chapter 17
My father pressed his lips together; I never spoke to him like this before, and I knew he wasn’t sure what to make of this change
in me.
“You were never supposed to become the King’s slut,” he said through his teeth, his voice low and dangerous. “You were only supposed to be his slave.”
My heart sank at his words, and this time I did flinch, taken aback by the way he was speaking to me. We might not have had a strong relationship, but he never spoke to me this cruelly before.
It made me wonder if I ever truly knew him at all.
“Cecilia?” A voice said from nearby, interrupting my very pleasant conversation with my father.
I turned to see Cora walking towards me, a concerned look on her face.
I hadn’t realized she had already finished speaking with the King. It felt as though she had just left. My eyes darted around the room briefly, and I saw Vivian on the other side of the room, speaking with Elora and her other friends. They were laughing and gossiping per usual.
I turned to look at my father again, to say something in return, anything. But I didn’t get the chance because he was already
gone.
“Are you alright?” Cora asked. “You look as though you might get sick.”
I let out a breath and turned back towards her.
“No, I’m fine. How was your talk with the King?” I asked, unable to help myself.
She lifted one shoulder, looking almost bored.
“Uneventful,” she said, making my brows shoot up. “I don’t even know why he called for me.”
I frowned.
“What did you talk about?”
“Barely anything,” she said with another shrug. “I think he only asked to speak with me because I was a safe choice. He know I wasn’t interested.”
I studied her face for a moment, but I couldn’t tell if she was lying or not. Cora wasn’t the type to lie, but maybe withheld some information. Before I could ask, though, my attention was quickly turned towards the balcony again, where I saw Sophia descending the stairs.
My heart sank when I saw that her hair was now down; it was up when I last saw her… before she went to meet with King Leopold.
She was in the process of fixing her dress, a contented look on her face as she reached the last step. When she got closer, I saw the lipstick smudge on the side of her face, and I hated the burn I felt behind my eyes.
Sophia’s eyes found mine, and the corner of her lips lifted. She wiped the side of her mouth with her finger, trying to clean off the makeup smudge, but it was too late because I had already seen it.
