“What is going on?” I asked, my voice a bit breathier than I meant it. I cleared it and tried again. “Why am I here?”

“Did Landon not explain it to you?” He asked, raising his brows. “I am to give you your lessons myself going forward.”

“I don’t understand why,” I said, stepping closer to him, my arms folding across my chest. “That seems a little odd, don’t you think?”

“Not at all,” he said, the corner of his lips tipping into a smile. “Actually, I think it’s perfect. You are my favored concubine after all. It’s only right that I take you under my wing and teach you myself.”

“Are you sure you have the time?” I asked, challenging him.

“I’m sure I can make the time,” he replied, his eyes never leaving mine.

The heat of his scrutiny was almost too much for me, and I had to look away before I completely combusted. After a moment, he stepped even closer to me until there was barely any space between us.

“Let’s get started. I walk into a room… what’s the first thing you do?” He asked, his eyes watching me intently.

I straightened my shoulder and looked down. I curtsied slightly, keeping my eyes fixed on the ground. It was never a good idea to look an Alpha in the eyes upon first meeting them, because their wolves will take that as a challenge. And because he’s an Alpha King, I knew I had to bow or curtsy right off the bat to show him respect.

“Tell me what the proper dining etiquette is,” he said, his arms folding across his chest as he assessed me.

Still keeping my eyes on the ground, I replied with what I knew.

“Nobody sits until the Alpha King sits. Nobody eats until the Alpha King takes his first bite,” I tell him. “And then the Alpha’s will take a bite, and then their daughters. Then, the rest of us. It’s to show respect for not only the higher-ranked wolves, but also our guests.”

“Very good,” he said, sounding almost impressed. “Seems you’ve been paying attention in class. Now, tell me what you’ll do if I find my mate during this ceremony.”

His question caught me off guard; the weight of it made my chest feel heavy. This time, I looked up at him, meeting his eyes. They were dark, but that wasn’t unusual for King Leopold, But there was also a hint of something else in them. He was waiting for my answer, and I knew I needed to answer carefully.

“The concubines will be escorted out of the ceremony,” I say, the words coming out almost below a whisper. “We return to our rooms and pack…” I continued. “We return to our home packs the following day.”

His jaw had tightened with each word that I spoke. For a moment, he didn’t say anything. He just stared at me like he was waiting for me to say more, but I wasn’t sure what more he wanted me to say, so I kept my mouth shut. I finally looked away from him, afraid that he would see the many emotions in my eyes if he stared too long.

“What were you going to learn today?” He asked, his voice coming out harder than it had a moment ago.

“Dance,” I tell him without hesitation. “That’s when I found out my name was taken off the roster.”

“Perfect,” he said. “Then that’s exactly what we are going to learn.”

He offered me his hand, and I stared at it like it would burn me if I touched it. He kept his hand outstretched and his eyes on my face. I hesitantly took his hand, and without warning, he pulled me close, his chest pressing against mine, and my breathing hitched.

I felt his hand on the small of my back, keeping me against him while his other hand securely held mine. I stared up at him, my eyes wide.
