Chapter 93
Lillian’s POV

Though his natural affection set me off-guard, and his purpose confused me, as we walked to the archery range, a place I felt at home almost more than anywhere else, my confidence started to return to me.
“You arrived quickly,” I said. “The Queen was ready to cast judgement. It would have been bad if you hadn’t arrived when you did.”
“Maybe,” he said.
I stopped walking and turned toward him. “How was it you were able to get here so quickly?”
He simply looked at me for a long moment, then spoke. “I’ve been keeping track of you.”
My eyes went wide. My heart picked up pace.
“I knew what the Queen requested of you, and I thought you might come to me for help. I waited, expecting. But you never did.”
“I don’t always need you to save me,” I said, but then bit my lip, feeling like a hypocrite. If he hadn’t showed up today when he had, intervening with the Queen, I would have been cast out. Maybe I did need him to save me, but it hurt to admit that.
“You stood your ground, and I’m impressed by all that you’ve pulled off,” he said, and glanced around before his gaze settled on me once more.
I startled a second time. That almost sounded like a compliment, but that couldn’t be. Grayson did not like me. He couldn’t respect me.
Yet… I gained strength in the words. He didn’t point out how he had saved me again, he only mentioned my own strengths – of which, he had only seen a small amount.
I was eager to show him more.
He wanted to see what I could do with a bow. That was one of my greatest strengths.
I turned back to the archery range. We were nearly there, so I only walked a few steps to find a suitable bow and a quiver of arrows. The quiver on my back, I moved toward the open position in the range, and drew an arrow. Notching it, I took a steadying breath, held it, took aim and – released.
The arrow zoomed through the air before piercing straight through the center bullseye of the target.
Some of the ladies gasped. Others clapped.
Eager to show it wasn’t a fluke. I pulled three more arrows, one by one, and, one by one, shot them into the bullseye, each arrow very near each other.
All of the ladies clapped now, even the ones in the other groups.
Lowering my bow, I turned to look at Grayson. His face was unreadable, but his eyes were piercing and intense, looking at me like he was trying to dissect me. Had I surprised him? Had he underestimated me just like everyone else? Or, was he the one person who could actually see me, and I had just accomplished what he expected?
His lip started to curl, and for an instant, a look of pride crossed his face. For that brief moment, victory swelled within me, and I felt vindicated. Seen.

A blink, and his pride was gone, his lips once more a harsh line, his gaze cool. The good feelings inside of me vanished at the same time.
“Why don’t you come here more often?” he asked. “You seem to enjoy this.”
“It’s my understanding that the role of ladies generally doesn’t allow them to train,” I said. I lowered my gaze bitterness rising within me. “I know Ophelia is the exception.”
“I have no desire to stifle you with those kind of oppressive rules,” he said.
Surprised, I looked up again.
“Train as much as you want. Visit these grounds. Organize physical training activities for the other women, if that is your wish,” he said. “You are not a prisoner here.”
I didn’t know if that was true, but… his support sent a flicker of emotion through me. Maybe he did care? No. At once, I suppressed that line of thinking. I was being overly-sentimental.
