Chapter 92
Lillian’s POV
With the Queen there, the entire mood of the event fully shifted. Most of the ladies even stopped what they were doing, giving their full attention to the Queen as if waiting to see how she would react, wanting to follow her lead.
“When I saw on the invitation that we were meeting at the training grounds, I wasn’t sure what to expect,” the Queen said.
“It’s as I told you, your Highness,” Ophelia said, stepping forward. “She isn’t one of us, so she doesn’t know how to hold a proper event. The training grounds is no place for a ladies’ event. Look at how everyone is acting. There is a total breech of decorum here, with everyone acting like fools.”
The gathered ladies lowered their heads. The ones that had been holding rackets dropped them outright and stepped back like they were poison.
The Queen looked at each of them, and each shrunk back as she was observed. Then the Queen turned her gaze
onto me.
“Lillian. Explain yourself. What is so wrong with our regular events that you would choose something so… questionable? Especially when I had made clear why this event is so very important for you.”
Gathering my courage, I stepped forward. I refused to slink back like everyone else. I had planned this event, and I was proud of it. Before the Queen arrived, everyone had been having fun. No one, not even the Queen, should be able to take away the good that was done here today.
“Tea parties and brunches are fine,” I said. “But none of us should be confined to them. An event like this, a change of pace, allows for us to have fun in a different way, and the physical activity is healthy.”
“I did not ask you to organize an exercise class,” the Queen said. “This was to be an event to honor your status as Luna Princess. It seems to me as if you do not truly want that role.”
“I do want the role,” I insisted. “I just thought that trying something different would be beneficial –”
“There is no need for different when the way things have been done has worked well since the beginning,” the Queen said.
Beside her, Ophelia smirked.
This out-of-the-box thinking only had to occur because Ophelia had blocked my every other path. I hadn’t been given permission to use any of the rooms I’d need for a more traditional affair, and the Head Maid also said they didn’t have enough supplies to give me.
I’d had no choice but to branch out into the unorthodox. But I held my tongue. Ophelia had done worse to me, and Grayson had taken her side. What hope did I have of convincing the Queen that Ophelia had set out to sabotage me?
Besides, I wasn’t ashamed of the event I had planned and was running. And until the Queen arrived, it had been a
success.
“Perhaps if you would join in the activities,” I said, as gently as I could, “You might see why the others were enjoying them.”
Ophelia scoffed.
The Queen sneered. “I see no one enjoying those activities now.”

Grayson had no such restraints. “You’ve chosen, archery as one of your activities, and I see no instructor.”
“I showed them myself,” I said.
“You have talent with the bow?”
“Yes.”
“Show me,” he said.
I glanced at the range. There was a spot open. “Here? Now?”
“Would there be a better time?”
“No. I suppose not.”
“Then show me your talent,” he said.
“Alright.”
I turned to walk toward the archery range. Grayson fell in step beside me, his hand lifting to the small of my back.
The touch made me want to tremble, a warmth rising from the pool of my belly. But I pushed it away, remembering his callous words, his cruel dismissals.
This request wasn’t because he was interested. This touch couldn’t have been made of affection. Even his help today had to be for some other purpose, more important than actually helping me.
He had said he wanted to see my talent, but that couldn’t be all this was.
Instead, it had to be a challenge.
