Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 69

Chapter 69

Lillian’s POV

My eyes went wide, and though I was sure I wasn’t the only surprised person in the room, I couldn’t look away from Grayson long enough to check.

He was in a wheelchair, with Prime Beta behind him, wheeling him into the room, nearer my side, right in the center of the crowd, right before the Queen and the Council.

“Grayson…” the Queen gasped.

The King, who had been utterly disinterested during the whole of my accusation now stood and pushed his way through the council in front of him.

“Son? You have awakened,” he said, a smile growing on his face.

Grayson looked down at me and then at the guard holding me roughly by the arm. “Release my mate at once.’

The excited murmuring that had started with Grayson’s reveal quieted again now at his words.

“So it’s true…?” someone behind me whispered.

The guard started to release me. Before I could fully stand up, to get to Grayson, a blur of silk and lace moved quicker. Ophelia threw herself at Grayson, practically falling into his lap.

“Grayson! Oh, thank the Gods, we’ve all been so worried!” she cried in joy.

“Control yourself, Ophelia,” Grayson grumbled. “We are in front of the court.

Ophelia paled and scrambled away from Grayson, at least out of his lap, but she stayed close enough that she could return to that spot in an instant if he wished it so.

Grayson just looked at her with cold indifference, more so even than he showed toward me the past few days. I felt a chill just looking at it, though Ophelia bounced back quickly.

“I’m just so relieved you are alive,” she said.

Grayson looked away from her to me. “At my side, Lillian.”

Righting myself, I moved to stand beside him, near Prime Beta, who gave me only a passing glance, Grayson leaned, ever so slightly, toward me, but then as if catching himself, straightened in the chair.

“How is this possible, son?” the King asked. “How can you be awake, when we were to be alerted at once of any change in your recovery?”

“How long have you been awake?” the Queen demanded. “Why keep this secret?”

“I only woke last night,” Grayson said smoothly. “And I had spent the night… indisposed…” He glanced at me, focusing on the mark on my neck.

My blush burned hot, and it was all I could do to keep from hiding it with my hands. My reaction was genuine, and in seeing that, people would understand.

It hadn’t been my secret to share, that was why I had kept quiet. But I had never cheated on Grayson. He was the one who had given me the mark.

Whispers began once more, and among them, I could determine understanding.

“I was awakened by the Lillian. The Mate’s Call was so strong, I could not ignore it. It found me, even in my comatose state, and dragged me back to the land of the living.”

“Thank the Goddess for Lillian then,” the King said, looking at the Queen. His smile seemed genuine. The Queen’s came a half-second later.

“Yes.”

“We should restore her title,” the King said. “Such an unfortunate misunderstanding.”

“Agreed,” the Queen said. She looked back to me. “Lillian, I hereby revert the damage caused. Your title is restored. You are the Luna Princess once more.”

“Thank you,” I said, lowering my head in respect. Though the words had been given to the Queen, they had been meant for Grayson.

What he had done here, and at the cost to himself and his plans, was not lost on me.

I didn’t know that he had awakened just to save me, but that he had still done so felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

Maybe he didn’t resent me after all. At least, not as much as I had previously thought from his coldness.

I glanced around, seeing the reaction of the court. Most seemed willing to accept me again. Except Calvin, who, pale, was pushing to the back of the crowd.
