Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 65

Chapter 65

“The servant injected me with something,” I said. “Then she locked me in the shed. I broke my way out and… you know the rest.”

His scowl deepened and my heart ached. He clearly hadn’t wanted to bite me. He likely regretted it now. He was a good man. He had probably only bitten me out of a sense of obligation to save my life.

Did he now wish he had just let me die?

He stood and I winced, expecting a rejection or a scolding. Instead, after a quick frown at me, he went to the closet and withdrew some pajamas. He tossed them at me.

“Dress while I’m in the bathroom,” he said. “Then I’m calling for the doctor.”

Beta’s POV

I stepped into Grayson’s room as the doctor was leaving it.

Lillian was sitting in her pajamas in the bed. Grayson was standing, fully dressed. The room reeked of sex.

“Beta,” Grayson said. “Only the most trusted maids are allowed in here today.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

“And… after you’ve seen to that, go to the medical wing and follow up on the results for the samples the doctor has. I want answers as soon as they are available.”

“Yes, Alpha,” I said again, biting back my annoyance. My loyalty to my prince was unshakable, but I truly disliked the orders that had me running around like an errand boy. Still, the prince’s will was my command.

“Go now,” he said. He glanced at Lillian, who seemed to be doing her best to ignore him, her face turned to the far wall. Grayson’s face softened, looking at her. I wondered if he even realized.

I nodded, though he wasn’t looking at me. Dismissed, I turned and walked out the door.

I did as he requested, seeing first to the maids, and then to the medical wing. I had to wait a few hours for the

results to come in. The doctor handed me a folded up sheet of paper with no envelope.

Stepping out of the room, curiosity got the better of me, I checked the results.

Lillian had been tested for a drug that would induce heat.

That result was positive.

Lillian could have given it to herself, hoping to trap the prince into a mating bond, but… no. That didn’t seem like her. Though I didn’t fully trust her, and while I didn’t think she was right for the prince, I also wasn’t sure she was capable of that kind of manipulation.

Especially since acquiring a drug like this would be beyond her means.

But it would be within the means for others of the court. Including my sister.

Ophelia was always an early riser, craving her coffee at dawn. I quickly found her in a sitting room already indulging. Closing the door to the room, I approached her.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked. “Are you ill?”

“Did you do this?” I said and held open the toxicology report.

Ophelia only glanced at it. “So what if I did?”

My gut sunk. I had been suspicious, noticing my sister’s jealousies, but to have that suspicion confirmed. “Did you know that this could have killed her?”

Her eyes went a little wide. “What? Is she alright?”

“You didn’t know that?” I asked, to be certain. Her face showed shock, but she set her coffee cup to the side

without as much as a tremble.

“Of course, I didn’t,” she assured me. “I swear, brother. Yes, alright, I arranged for Lillian to be drugged, but only to disgrace her in front of the court. I thought it would wear off. I didn’t know it would hurt her.”

My Beta instincts were at war with my desire to believe my sister.

But… maybe this had been a mistake. If it was, she shouldn’t suffer the consequences for it. Something like this… Ophelia could be jailed, exiled, or even killed.

“Do not do anything like this again,” I said firmly.

She nodded, her eyes wide.

I wouldn’t lie to Grayson, just omit what I knew were certain truths. But I would keep watching my sister.

I only hoped Ophelia was being honest with me.
