He yawned. “I’m not tired.”

I could only imagine the fatigue that was taking hold of his small body. He must have been under such stress the whole time he was at the prison, and then during the operation to rescue him. He wouldn’t know the rescuers, wouldn’t know they were there to help him. Maybe, even as he was brought here, he still didn’t know if he was safe. Not until he saw me.

Now, it was taking hold. Each of his blinks lasted longer than the last. He fought off the sleep, trying to keep his

eyes open.

“I will never let anything like that happen to you again,” I promised.

That seemed to be enough to finally convince him, and his eyes finally closed. His breathing evened out, and he fell asleep.

The moment I was sure he was in dreamland, my tears started to fall. Wanting to protect him from the sight, even unconscious, I covered my face with my hands and sobbed quietly into my palms.

I stayed like that for a long time, until a hand landed on my shoulder. Startled, I looked up into the patient eyes of the familiar doctor. The man Grayson trusted with his secret. The one I trusted with my life.

He gestured for me to step out into the hallway, then went out there first. I stayed only a moment more with Ronan, kissing him lightly on the forehead. After, I followed the doctor into the hallway. I left the door open and he made no motion to close it either. The steady beeping of the machines helped keep me calm, reminding me that my brother was safe. Alive. Here.

“How is he?” I asked.

The doctor’s face was usually emotionless, or even patient and calm. Now, as I asked those words, his face tightened, looking grim. My heart felt like it was being clenched in a vice grip.

“It’s not just the injuries we see on the outside,” the doctor told me. “He is a child, but still a werewolf. He should be recovering faster than he is. His consistent weakness is a worry. We didn’t know why, so we ran some tests. We are getting the results back now.”

“What do they say?” I asked.

The doctor hesitated.

“Please, doctor,” I said. “You brought me out here to tell me. Whatever is wrong with him, I have to know. He’s my brother and I… He’s my responsibility.”

He wasn’t my child, but with my father so cruel and with Calvin threatening us at every turn, we were the only family either of us had left.

That he was so young, that he had already gone through so much. I was desperate to protect him however I could.

“The tests were positive for poison,” the doctor said. “Wolf venom.”

The lead bar in the pit of my stomach added on weight. “Is that dangerous? Is there an antidote?”

Poisoning a child was cruel, even for Calvin. But then, his capacity for viciousness continued to surprise me. It seemed like a bottomless well, with no depth he wouldn’t stop at.

“There are treatments,” the doctor told me. “The problem is the sheer amount in his system. He must have been

given many doses over months. That he continues to fight proves he is a warrior. But… it makes things difficult for us to neutralize the toxin.”

“What are you saying, doctor? He won’t be healed?”

The doctor’s eyes turned sad. “You must prepare yourself for the worst. There isn’t much we can do for him right now but keep him comfortable.”

New tears rose in my eyes. “How long does he have?”

“Another month. Maybe two now that he’s receiving treatments. Much longer than that would take a miracle.”
