Chapter 42
Lillian’s POV
“How is that possible?” Calvin demanded. “Where did they breach? I want answers, damn you!”
The guard seemed shaken by tried to answer Calvin’s questions as best he could. They came from all sides, punching holes in the barriers. The breach point into the building was unknown. It seemed as if one minute Ronan was there, and the next he had disappeared.
Calvin became increasingly more angry, soon taking to just shouting at the guard.
I stood on the other side of the car, looking around at the chaos. Maybe I had been in shock for a moment, to suddenly go from thinking my brother was here to knowing he was elsewhere. With royal forces, he had to be safe
This had been a rescue mission, and the only one who could have pulled it off like this was Grayson.
Unknown feelings flooded my chest, but they were confusing and I had no time to consider them now.
Instead, I had a realization.
I had only been complying with Calvin out of fear for my brother’s safety. If Ronan wasn’t here, if he was safe, then I didn’t need to comply anymore.
Looking at the barriers around the building, I searched for one of the holes the royal forces had punched through.
There.
Not more than twenty feet from where I was, an opening. The guards there looked frantic, searching the forest beyond for more attackers. They weren’t paying attention to anything behind them, likely not expecting a jailbreak.
Calvin continued to shout at the guard, giving him his full focus.
I didn’t hesitate. Couldn’t. I only had one shot with the element of surprise, and I wasn’t going to waste it by standing around any longer.
With one final glance at Calvin to make sure he was properly distracted, I turned my sights forward again. My goal was clear. Break through the hole in the barrier and run like hell.
Now.
Without one more moment of hesitation, I took off in a mad sprint toward the opening. I was nearly there before I heard Calvin’s voice behind me, shouting, “Lillian! Someone stop her!”
Unfortunately, his call made those beyond the barriers turn and look. I pressed on, knowing I only had one shot at this and it was too late to turn back now.
I pushed my body hard, as fast as it would go. I made it through the barrier. The first guard reached for me, but I dodged him. The second also reached for me. This one caught me by the arm, but at my speed, I used my momentum to turn my arm away and break free. I continued running.
The forest was right there. I was so close that I could practically taste freedom. But then other guard caught me around the waist. His arms were too strong, his grip like a vice around my waist. He lifted me up and slammed me down onto the ground. The air punched from my lungs.
The other guards caught up, surrounding me. I looked up, from the ground, and saw those same trees, that same freedom. My chest in the dirt, that freedom seemed far away now.

The guards roughly pulled at my arms, righting me on my feet. Only one of them stayed with me, the others resuming their search beyond the barrier for the elusive royal forces. The one with me dragged me back to Calvin.
Calvin, his face red with fury, slapped me across the face with an open palm. I tasted blood in my mouth but I swallowed it down. He didn’t say one word to me, instead looking to the guard gripping my arm hard enough to
bruise.
“Lock her up in my bedroom,” Calvin said. “When I settle things here, I will handle her.” Looking at me, his eyes flashed dangerously. “I will break you, Lily. Once and for all,”
Bile rose into my throat, alongside the blood. If he thought I would give into him easily, he was mistaken.
“Get her out of my face,” Calvin said to the guard. He shoved me forward toward the prison. For now, I knew I had no choice but to follow.
The guard’s hand was iron on my arm. He led me up the stairs. I listened hard, but didn’t hear anyone else around us. Everyone, from what I could tell, had been called away to search the grounds or defend the building.
I knew, even with the guards mostly pulled outside, the higher I was taken into this building, the harder it would be to escape. If I was going to do something – to take advantage of how much everyone here seemed to underestimate me, Calvin included, then I needed to act now.
I was on the higher step, with the guard behind me, his hand on my back.
“Move it,” he said gruffly.
At once, I swiveled on him heel, grabbed his wrist, and twisted. His arm broke and he cried out, falling to his knee on the stair. I used the height difference between us now to my advantage, and I kicked him square on the chest.
He toppled backwards, waving his arms to catch his balance — and didn’t.
As he stumbled down the stairs, I ran past him, out onto the landing of the second floor and then through the door. This floor seemed to be all servants’ quarters, who seemed to be hiding, not caring about me at all.
At the far end of the hallway was a window. I dashed there and threw it open. There was a tree beyond. It’d be a far jump but I was willing to risk a broken leg if it meant freedom.
I crawled up to the windowsill and lunged.
By some miracle, I reached the tree. From there, I shimmied down to the ground and laid flat in the brush, waiting for my opening. I lowered my breathing to as shallow as I could.
The guards, for now, appeared oblivious. As did Calvin, who I could hear rounding the corner.
“Let them have the brat if they want. Now that I have Lillian, it hardly matters. All I have to do is keep her here until she is pregnant, then she can go wherever she wants.”
“Alpha,” said the guard accompanying him. “Won’t she tell people what you did to her?”
“She wouldn’t dare. The royal family wouldn’t tolerate her having another man’s child. She’ll be a good girl and pretend the child is Grayson’s. Who would doubt her? Especially with Grayson… Are we in place there?”
In… place?
Calvin’s plans for me made me sick but I was mostly free now. I would not allow them to capture me again. But… what else could he have planned. In place… for what?
“We are, Alpha,” the guard said. “The maid has been paid off. The poison has been delivered without anyone’s

knowledge. She should be moving soon.”
“She’d better,” Calvin said. “She asked for an arm and a leg to complete this task.” Calvin scoffed. “What a greedy little maid expecting so much cash. All to put some poison in a comatose man’s food. It’s not like he could complain about the taste.”
The other guard just nodded.
“Well, let her have what she wants. I’m in too good a mood to overly care. Soon, Grayson will die, and my own flesh and blood will be next in line for the throne.”
“Yes, Alpha,” the guard said.
Calvin laughed mockingly. “Long live the king.”
