Lillian’s POV

“You are finally being such a good girl,” Calvin said, the edge of his lips curling up into a smirk. “Obeying me without a word. A man could get used to this kind of behavior from a woman.”
The contents of my stomach curdled, and I felt sick. But I held it all down, not wanting to give anything away.
Our escape so far had been easy enough, but I knew even though we were now in the car and outside of the gates of the main estate, several checkpoints still littered the way between where we were and our pack lands.
“If only you could behave like this all the time,” Calvin mused from beside me in the backseat of his long sedan The driver up front was blocked with a partition, but I was sure they must have been one of Calvin’s loyal lackeys, to go along with this ruse.
To defy the royal family by stealing the Luna Princess away.
though, no one had seemed to like me overmuch. I doubted if anyone would come looking for me. Grayson,
be, but only so he could kill me himself for my betrayal.
adn’t wanted to betray him, but in the end, I suppose he had been right to question how far I would go for the ong of my brother. I would never kill anyone, but I would run away, endangering myself.
“You did so well,” Calvin continued. He laughed, like he couldn’t believe how easy it was to sneak me away. “You were so quiet, it will be hours before anyone realizes you’ve gone. They’ll probably just assume you are out with your friends.”
I didn’t have any friends, but I wasn’t going to tell him that. I didn’t want to talk to him at all.
He was only allowing me to stand upright because the windows of the car were tinted. When we left the grounds, I had to hide under a blanket on the floor.
The partition lowered a crack. “Sir, there’s another checkpoint ahead.” The partition went up.
Calvin looked

his smile fading. “Get on the floor again, Lillian. And don’t you dare make a sound, not just but also your own. You wouldn’t want the royal family to think you were having a secret th your ex, would you? I don’t think they’d take kindly to that. They’d probably kick you out and me anyway.”
ped my lips together.
Back on the floor. Now,” Calvin said.
It churned my stomach to have to take orders from him, but for Ronan’s sake, and to a lesser extent, my own, I dropped to the floor and did as he said. Dropping back to the ground, I tried to make myself appear as flat as possible, as I covered myself with the blanket. Calvin made a few quick adjustments
“Stay silent,” he said.
He’d already said this, I already knew. But he seemed to like making commands anyway, especially when I had no choice but to follow them.
A knock sounded at the window, and Calvin opened it.
“State your business,” said someone from outside.
I had to bite my tongue to keep from saying a word. No one was going to save me or Ronan from this fate. I was the

only one who could change things, but I had to enter the belly of the beast to do it.
To save Ronan, I had to do what Calvin wanted. For now.
“I’m returning to my pack lands,” Calvin said.
“Identification?”
Calvin grumbled as he shuffled. “I’m the future Alpha. It might serve you well to learn my face.”
The man outside said nothing for a long moment. Then, simply, “You may pass.”
The car pushed forward again, and Calvin rolled up his window. I didn’t move a muscle until he told me, sit up.”
Wordlessly, I moved back onto the seat beside him. His grin was even more unbearable now, cocksure, like he was invincible. I wished I could smack him, but that would only make things worse.
Instead, I turned away from him and looked out the window. Calvin just laughed.
I watched the trees and mountains, looking for birds and wildlife in the passing brush. Searching for any sense of -normalcy beyond the walls of this car.
After a while, I realized I didn’t recognize anything.
“We aren’t going back to the pack,” I said, realizing.
“Not to the areas you are familiar with, no,” Calvin said. “Though the compound is within pack boundaries. Just the far edge of them.”
I looked at him. “The compound?”
He hummed. “That’s what I like to call it. It’s a holding facility. Think of it like a resort hotel just for you and your brother.” His grin turned vicious. “And anyone else I want to make disappear.”
My blood ran cold. Holding facility meant jail. I hoped it didn’t mean dungeon, but knowing Calvin…
I looked back out the window, attempting to prepare myself for what I would soon face. I pushed down my fear. The decision to come here had been mine, and I would face it bravely. To protect Ronan, I would do what I needed to do.
Eventually, we turned off the main road and down a series of winding side roads that cut through the forest. And then, towering above the trees, I saw the three-story, brick prison that would soon be my new home,
Ronan was here? At once I wished I could take his place, to take away any harm he was experiencing.
“Please,” I said to Calvin, speaking for the first time since entering this car. “Ronan is just a child. Please don’t hurt him. Do what you will to me, but leave him alone.”
Calvin scoffed, a sharp, disapproving sound. “Any pain that befell him was your fault, Lily. If you had only listened to me from the start, none of this would have happened. You chose this, and these are the consequences of those actions.”
I closed my mouth, the guilt pressing down on me hard. My boldness diminished, and for a moment, I felt defeated and small.
Had this been my fault? Had I lead my brother to ruin?

We were waved through three gates, the guards looking stressed. As we parked in front of the building itself, we emerged from the car into chaos.
The guards were running around, holding their weapons, in disarray, with no sense of organization to their movements at all.
“What the hells is happening here?” Calvin said. At first the guards ignored him, too caught up in their own frantic actions. Calvin, growled, as he grabbed one of the guards by the shoulder and made them stop. “Report to your Alpha. Now.”
Calvin wasn’t the Alpha yet, but that didn’t seem to matter here. The guard immediately fell in line and responded.
“We are under attack, Sir. Enemies from all sides.”
My heart picked up speed. “What about Ronan?” I asked, my worry rebuilding my courage.
Calvin glared at me, but still asked, perhaps his own worry building. “The boy is safe?”
“No, Sir,” the guard replied. “He was taken.”
“Taken? Who the hells even knew he was here? And who would want him?”
“The attackers brandish the insignia of royal forces, Sir,” the guard explained.
I froze. Royal forces. Did that mean…? Could it mean..?
Grayson?
