Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 128

Chapter 128

Lillian’s POV

My heart leapt up into my throat. Had she recognized me after all? I wanted to keep walking, to pretend I hadn’t heard her, but that would make me more suspicious. So I stopped. Slowly, I started to turn. I kept my head low my eyes down.

Ophelia gestured toward a spill on the floor. “That needs cleaning,” she said simply. Then she and her entourage turned and walked away.

I held in my relief, not wanting to appear obvious by exhaling too loudly. But I did go to the spill./Lowering myself down to my knees, I withdrew a rag from my outfit and cleaned it. Then, standing, I hurried after the others into the kitchen.

Ivory gave me an incredulous look. “Did she figure you out?”

“No,” I said. “She just needed me to clean something.”

Her expression cleared and she nodded. “Yeah, that’s what I thought. They never look closely.”

She was confident now, but she hadn’t been just a second ago. Goddess, was this plan really going to work, or was I doomed after all?

It didn’t matter now, I supposed. I was here in the kitchen, in my servant garb, and Grayson needed rescue. For him, I could handle a bit of danger. To save his life, I would face much worse.

The cook was confused by my presence, but Ivory filled her in. After that, she loaded my tray up with food, to really be convincing.

Tray in hand, I followed the group of servants to the stairs down to the dungeon. Around and around we went down the stairwell, deep into the pit of the palace. At a thick door, we were stopped by the guards posted there. He appeared very bored and barely looked at us as he opened the door, letting us deeper into the dungeon. He didn’t look at me twice.

The dungeon was as dim and dank as I remembered, with stale air and only torch light leading the way. The servants peeled off, going their own ways now to deliver their food. Everyone already promised to keep their eyes open for the prince, but…

I could… feel him. The bond that connected us, thrumming through me, led me to him in a way I didn’t fully understand or even wanted to acknowledge. To do so would be to admit a stronger bond between us than should have been possible. Than Grayson probably wanted.

He had only bonded with me to save me. I was sure, when all this was over, he would find a way to break things so that he could find a more suitable partner for an Alpha King, But for now, I would take advantage of the bond between us. If it meant making it easier to save his life, I wouldn’t be ungrateful for that.

Following the pull, I found myself standing outside of a dungeon cell of rusty iron bars. Grayson was sitting on the small wooden cot in the corner. He glanced up at me, then froze.

A second later, he was on his feet and rushing toward me. “What the hell are you doing here?” he demanded.

“Grayson, it’s me,” I said quickly.

“I know it’s you, Lily,” he said harshly. “Why else would I be this angry?”

I blinked. All of the other court members I had seen, even Ophelia, hadn’t seen me as I walked by. But Grayson

“I’m getting you out of here,” I said, and slipped him the bundle of servant clothes and the knife.

“What is this?” he said. “I’m not running. The evidence they have is bullshit, and I’ll be damned if I allow them to throw me under because of it. My father will do the investigation, and they will learn that the documents are illegitimate.”

“You don’t understand –

“I’m not running, Lillian.”

“Calvin wants to kill you,” I said. “He has an assassin that will come here and I heard… he wants to cut your head off.”

There were only a few ways to kill a Lycan as powerful as Grayson. Enough silver bullets to stop his heart was one way. The other was to fully remove his head.

“Please. Put these on. The servants are going to help us. We can sneak out and -”

“I’m not running,” he said. “I’m no coward, and I’m certainly not afraid of Calvin.”

Grayson. Please be reasonable. I know you want to clear your name, but you can’t do that if you are dead.”

“I won’t die.”

“If anything happens to you…” My voice broke.

Grayson came closer. Reaching through the bars, he placed his hands on either side of my arms. “Nothing is going to happen to me, Lily.”

“I don’t want you to die,” I told him, feeling vulnerable, my heart exposed.

Get out of the way, girl,” said a gruff voice from farther up the hallway.

Grayson and I both stilled.

“Is this what you do in your free time, Prince? Attempt to seduce servant girls?” the man asked.

“Get out of here,” Grayson said unkindly and gave me a shove – not enough to hurt, but enough to send me on my way.

I only moved a few feet before steadying myself.

The figure stalked closer. Wearing all black, he had a blade in his hand. With the way it flashed in the light, it was clearly silver.

“If you’ve come here to kill me, you are going to need a better plan that a fight,” Grayson said, growling.

“You don’t even know who I am.”

“You are underestimating me,” Grayson said. “That much is clear, regardless of who you are.”

“I’m a trained assassin, Prince. I will kill you and collect my bounty.”

“The only thing you will catch is that knife of yours back in your gut,” Grayson snapped. “Walk away now, and I. won’t kill you. Go back to Calvin and tell him he’s a coward for not facing me himself.”

“He’s paying me a lot of money for your head,” the assassin said. “A king’s bounty, that could change my life. could give up this life. Maybe buy a farm somewhere.” He laughed. “Or I would, if I didn’t like my job so much.

“Last chance,” Grayson said. “Turn back now.”

“Says the fish in a barrel,” the assassin said. “The man in the cage.” He eyed me. “Though maybe I could have some fun first. You wanted to seduce this one, yes? I could show you how it’s done before your end.”

I backed up a step.

The assassin stepped toward me.

Grayson shifted and in a blink, he burst through the rusty bars, his jaws going right for the assassin’s throat.
