Chapter 121
Grayson looked at me like I’d lost my mind.
“I know this man. He’s my former teacher, the one who taught me to handle a bow.”
“If he’s a friend,” Grayson said. “Why are there so many rogues pointing arrows at me.”
“A precaution,” Teacher said. “We saw you run into that town. We wanted to make sure you were on the right side.”
“Do I look like a Royal soldier?” Grayson asked.
“No,” Teacher admitted. “And Lillian vouches for you too. That goes farther than appearances,” He lifted his hand, and the rogues lowered their bows.”
“Who are you?” Grayson said, still tense.
“You can call me Lone Archer,” he said. “Everyone else does.”
“You seem familiar to me,” Grayson said.
“I get that a lot,” Teacher side, smirking. “Come. Break bread with us at my camp. Rest. We will compare notes, and you will take Lillian back to safety.”
He gave me a look. “Where you can find it.”
Teacher stepped back from me. Turning he started into the forest. The rogues followed his lead, most falling into step behind him, with only a few staying behind to watch the town.
Grayson immediately came to my side. His look to me was incredulous, but he schooled it as he took my hand. Together we walked forward, following leader.
“What was going on in town?” I whispered to Grayson.
“As we feared,” he replied, but quickly returned his eyes to Teacher, saying no more. Without more context, my mind filled with visions of horrors. Later, I would ask him to explain. For now, I understood his wish for silence. At least about this.
“This… Lone Archer… he is the man who trained you?” Grayson asked.
“Yes. In exchange for some food.”
The Lone Archer glanced back. “It wasn’t just that, though. I’m sorry to play the ruse so long. I’ve heard what happened to your mother. There’s no sense hiding this anymore, Your mother asked me to train you, Lillian. I lingered because of her requests. She wanted you to grow strong,”
Warmth bloomed in my heart for my mother, taken from me far too soon, Thinking of her made me smile, even if she always had sadness in her eyes. As an adult, knowing the truth about my father, I wondered how truly happy she could have been in that marriage.
Blinking back the pain, I refocused on my Teacher.
So many years had passed since I had last seen him, and he still looked exactly the same. He should be older now, but there were no gray hairs on his head, no wrinkles under his eyes.
“Lone Archer,” Grayson said. “It’s strange, for a man to go by a title instead of a name.”

Teacher shrugged. “Is it? I’ve been going by titles nearly all my life. I don’t think anyone remembers my true name anymore. I’m not even all that sure about it.”
“You must be old then,” Grayson said. “But you look young.”
“Good genes, I guess. A strong wolf. Healthy living. Lots of exercise.”
“There’s something else,” Grayson said.
“You think so?” Teacher asked, stopping. He turned fully to face Grayson. “You seem like you have something to say. So say it.”
“I recognize you now,” Grayson said. “You are the First Warrior.”
Teacher’s friendly smile fell. “You think? And what do you intend to do about that, little prince?”
Prince?
Teacher’s grin returned but it was different this time, more hostile, as he lifted his bow, aiming his arrow straight at Grayson, who growled in return, his hands lifting, his fingers curling like claws.
“You might know me, but I know you just as well, Prince Grayson. Your family is at fault for all that’s occurring here. Why shouldn’t I kill you now? Make myself a champion of the people just one more time.”
