He cursed Xavier out while desperately trying to comfort her, sweating bullets in his panic. "Stop crying. I'll take you in. I'll treat you to a massive dinner. I'll buy you whatever you want."
After awkwardly getting her to calm down, something clicked in Gavin's head. "Why don't you go see our mentor? He's always admired you and considered you his greatest pride. He'd be thrilled if you went to him."
Summer hung her head in shame. "I don't have the face for that. I was so stubborn back then that I actually made him sick with worry. He's returned every single holiday gift I've sent over the years. I even heard he took on a new student last year—a twenty-year-old genius. Have you met him?"
Gavin had met the kid, but seeing Summer looking so thoroughly defeated, he casually waved it off. "He's alright. A bright kid, sure, but he can't hold a candle to you."
Summer knew he was just trying to make her feel better, but her gloom lingered. "With a new prodigy around, I doubt he even considers me his student anymore."
"Stop wasting your brain cells on things that don't matter," Gavin said, patting her shoulder reassuringly. "From now on, you're rolling with me. We're going to hustle. Once you've racked up some stellar achievements, I'll drag you over to grovel for his forgiveness. He's got a sharp tongue but a soft heart; he'll definitely forgive you. But you have to deliver results first, got it?"
Gavin took her straight to the mall, where she unleashed a wave of revenge shopping—all charged directly to Xavier's credit card.
Summer pushed Gavin's card aside. "Since we aren't officially divorced yet, it'd be a waste not to max out that scumbag's account. Come on, I'm buying your birthday present."
"My birthday already passed," Gavin pointed out.
"It's for next year, the year after, and the next few decades. Are you never celebrating a birthday again?"
At that very moment, Xavier was at a high-end club, attending Julian's get-together.
His phone pinged endlessly with notifications.
With a drink in one hand, he picked up his phone with the other.
Julian clinked glasses with him and caught a glimpse of the screen, which was flooded with jaw-dropping transaction alerts.
