Keeping her new job duties firmly in mind, she didn't utter a word of complaint. She simply stood up and headed for the kitchen.
Opening the refrigerator, she stared at the dazzling array of ingredients and couldn't help but feel a twinge of resentment toward the ultra-rich.
Must be nice being wealthy. How much could one man possibly eat?
Yet the fridge was packed to the brim with premium ingredients and top-tier imported fruits.
Grapes of a variety she couldn't even name looked bursting with sweet juice.
The cherries were a deep, vibrant purple and ridiculously huge.
The waxberries were brightly colored, clearly sweet and perfectly ripe.
There were also lychees, pineapples, durian, watermelon, cantaloupe...
He had a wider selection than a gourmet supermarket.
He had only told her to cut some fruit, but didn't specify what he wanted.
She thought back, trying to remember if he had any particular favorites.
When they had lived together, they would be completely glued to each other the second they got home.
He was always the one who prepared the fruit—peeling it, cutting it into neat little cubes, placing it on a platter, and feeding it to her with a tiny fork.
When she tried to get him to eat some, he would lean in and kiss her, playfully stealing the piece straight from her mouth even though the platter was entirely full.
Snapping out of her daze, she picked out two types of fruit, washed them, and carried the platter back to the study.
She knocked, and only pushed the door open when he acknowledged her.
He didn't even look up at her, merely raising a hand and tapping his knuckles against the desk.
She set the fruit platter down. Seeing that he had no further instructions, she retreated to the sofa.
He worked in silence for a while before glancing over at her.
She was staring intently at her phone, completely absorbed in whatever she was looking at.
He glanced at the fruit, thought for a second, and ate two pieces of the cantaloupe.
"I'm done. Take it away," he announced.
She walked over, stared at the nearly full platter, and looked at him skeptically. "Did you even eat any?"
"Do I have to report my eating habits to you?"
She sighed. "Then what should I... do with the rest?"
"Throw it away."
"Throw it away?" Her temper immediately flared. "Isn't that a huge waste?"
