A sense of *'finally'* washed over her.
It felt like waiting for the other shoe to drop, and it had finally hit the floor.
She had been on edge ever since the supermarket, unable to shake the anxiety.
Turning to face him, she said, "About what happened earlier... I'm sorry. I was wrong, and I apologize."
"You think a single apology makes it all go away?" he glared at her, his eyes like ice. "You know exactly what kind of history Cecil and I have."
"I know," she replied evenly. "But whatever is going on between the two of you has absolutely nothing to do with Tilly or me..."
"Of course it has nothing to do with you," he snapped. "But Tilly is my daughter. My enemy is automatically her enemy!"
She stared at him in utter disbelief. "Why on earth would you force your adult grudges onto a toddler?"
"What else should I do? Encourage my daughter to hold hands and sing songs with the man trying to destroy me?"
She knew that if it weren't for her, Tilly and Cecil likely never would have crossed paths, let alone spoken to each other.
With a heavy sigh, she conceded, "It won't happen again."
"There is no 'again.'" His gaze hardened. "Whatever arrangement we had before is over."
"What does that mean?"
"It means you are never allowed to see her again."
"Edmond!" She frowned deeply. "You told me you'd agree to let me see her if I met three conditions. I did everything you asked, and now you're going back on your word?"
"Going back on my word requires you to not cross my absolute bottom line first!"
She tried desperately to reason with him. "I already apologized! I told you it would never happen again."
"You're literally living in his house right now. Your words mean absolutely nothing to me!"
