"Wren pivoted way too fast."
Sitting in the living room at Riverview Heights, Willow stared at her phone, the screen still frozen on the replay of the live stream.
Her face was a mask of furious disbelief.
"She never used to be like this."
The old Wren would have never retaliated this quickly.
She would have just endured the abuse in silence.
She would have hopelessly waited for people to suddenly understand her.
She would have choked down her humiliation and done nothing.
Jude looked at her, softening his tone. "Don't panic. The project isn't dead yet."
Willow looked up, a calculated flash of vulnerability swimming in her eyes.
"Jude, am I completely useless? The second Wren comes back, everyone acts like she's this untouchable genius."
Jude immediately frowned.
"Don't say that."
"But I'm just so scared." Willow dropped her gaze. "I'm terrified that I've fought so hard, and I'm still never going to be better than her."
Jude's heart immediately melted.
"I'm going to help you."
Willow looked up at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears.
"Why?"
Jude remained silent for a heartbeat.
"Because I believe you deserve this."
A triumphant gleam flashed in the depths of Willow's eyes.
She had practically wrung that exact same answer out of Lawrence just the night before.
But when Jude said it, there was a sickeningly sweet layer of genuine devotion.
It was purer.
For a split second, a flicker of guilt pricked at Willow's conscience.
But she immediately ruthlessly suffocated it.
She couldn't afford to lose a single pawn on her side of the board right now.
That evening, when Wren finally stumbled into her apartment, she was so utterly exhausted she could barely move.
The day had been an absolute meat grinder.
The Ethics Board inquiry, compiling the emergency data, running a live press conference, actively managing the public fallout—it never stopped.
She hadn't scored a total victory.
But she had successfully stopped the bleeding for now.
Julian had insisted on driving her home.
"I'll head over to the hospital first thing tomorrow and deal with The Ethics Board in person."
Wren nodded firmly. "I'm coming with you."
