Fearing she was angry, Leo quickly added, "He's probably just really busy. Margaret said Dad has important work to do."

Wren stood in the hallway of Stellaris Medical, staring out at the darkening city skyline.

Inside the conference room, Phoebe Price and the lawyers were still verifying the mediation documents.

She held a pen in her hand, gripping the cap a little too tightly.

"Leo," she said softly. "You can make excuses for him, but you don't have to write those excuses down as your feelings."

Leo didn't quite understand.

"Then what should I do about my homework?"

"Your teacher asked you to document the process, right?"

"Yeah."

"Then write down exactly what happened today."

"Write that Dad didn't show up?"

"Write down what you saw," Wren told him. "And write down how you felt about it."

Leo pinched his pencil. "Won't that be bad?"

"No."

"Margaret will be mad."

Wren closed her eyes.

She was all too familiar with that kind of hesitation.

A child having to worry if the adults would get angry just because he felt let down.

"That's Margaret's problem," she said. "You just focus on writing your part."

Leo looked down at his assignment card.

The paper was glaringly white, the little boxes so small.

He suddenly felt that writing was much harder than fixing a model.

After hanging up the phone, he sat there for a long time.

Then he picked up his pencil and wrote, stroke by stroke.

Dad and I agreed to fix the model at seven o'clock.

Dad said he would be late.

I waited until nine forty-five.

The next column read: My feelings.

Leo paused.

He wanted to write 'fine.'

Then he wanted to write 'it doesn't matter.'

Finally, he erased the first two words.

Eraser shavings scattered across the desk.

He wrote: Disappointed.

As soon as he finished, a tear plopped onto the paper.

He hastily wiped at it with his sleeve.

It didn't wipe clean.
