"Then you don't need to feel bad about yourself just because someone else starts crying."

Leo fell silent for a long time.

Finally, he gave a quiet hum of agreement.

By the time the car pulled up to Penny's Diner in the Southside, night had completely fallen.

The place was run-down, and the neon sign was flickering, but plumes of warm steam were rising from the entrance.

The moment Leo hopped out of the car, his eyes lit up.

"Mom, it's really here!"

Wren smiled. "Didn't you want to come here?"

"I thought you forgot."

Wren took his little hand in hers.

"I would never forget."

The owner of the diner still recognized Wren.

"Oh my, it's been ages! Your boy has gotten so big."

Wren smiled and nodded. "Two bowls of shrimp wonton soup, please. One without scallions."

Leo immediately beamed. "You remembered I hate scallions."

Wren looked down at him. "I did."

She remembered.

She remembered all of his tiny, specific habits.

But she also hoped that one day, Leo would understand that just because she remembered all those details didn't mean she had to be trapped by them forever, unable to live her own life.

When the soup arrived, Leo ate with serious enthusiasm.

Wren grabbed a napkin and wiped a drop of broth from his chin.

Suddenly, the little boy mumbled, "Mom, what I said on my birthday—about Willow understanding me better—I was wrong."

Wren's hand froze.

Leo kept his head down, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Because Willow always lets me play games, buys me stuff, and tells me things I want to hear. I just thought she was nicer."

"But when Dad read to me yesterday, he didn't even know what my favorite page was."
