She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry novel Chapter 697

Deep within Blackrock Penitentiary, the dim light filtering through the iron bars offered no warmth. The damp, frigid air was thick with the stench of rust and despair.

Jasmine was curled up on her rock-hard cot, her back pressed against the freezing concrete. The infected burns on her face had healed into a mess of twisted, gnarled scars. The bridge of her nose was permanently sunken, and jagged, monstrous lines stretched from her cheekbones to her jaw. She was a horrifying sight. When she first arrived, the other inmates had swaggered over, eager to assert dominance over fresh meat. But the second they got a look at her ruined face, they stumbled back in revulsion. She was so hideous that no one even wanted to breathe the same air as her.

Rumors spread that she was cursed, that just standing near her brought bad luck. Left entirely isolated, she spent her days staring blankly at the water-stained ceiling, completely motionless as the minutes bled into hours.

Occasionally, the women in the neighboring bunks would whisper. Someone had already sworn that the first chance they got, they were going to drag her into a blind spot and beat her to death just so they wouldn't have to look at her face anymore.

Every vile word drifted into her ears.

Jasmine's hollow pupils contracted slightly as her chaotic mind began to wander.

She thought of Lyra.

I'm going to keep proving my love to him until he finally marries me.

She recalled Lyra's soft, innocent features, the way her eyes would crinkle into crescents when she smiled. She remembered the day Lyra had come to her, heartbroken that no matter what she did, Rowan remained completely indifferent.

"At least he doesn't hate me enough to yell at me. I still have a chance."

Jasmine had listened in silence, offering no response. With her razor-sharp intellect, she saw the truth perfectly. Rowan didn't argue with her because he was polite; he ignored her because they weren't even on the same playing field. His utter apathy was the ultimate form of contempt.

After throwing out a few empty platitudes, Jasmine had asked, "What if you can never win him over?"

"I'm going to keep proving my love to him until he finally marries me."

Lyra had looked at her with bright, hopeful eyes. "Jasmine, you should marry my brother! Then we could actually be sisters."

"Once I marry Rowan, you and Caleb can get married, and we can host a massive double wedding!"
