The maritime patrol boats closed in rapidly from behind, sirens blaring. The blinding white glare of their searchlights hit the hull of the Ford family's luxury yacht, forcing the people on deck to shield their eyes.
Rowan Jameson had abandoned his jet ski for one of the patrol boats. With the entire waterway locked down, the surrounding fleet effectively hijacked the Ford yacht. Unable to break through, they had no choice but to decelerate and idle on the dark water.
As the patrol boat pulled alongside the yacht, the hulls swayed gently with the rolling waves. Seizing the narrow gap, Rowan vaulted over the railing and landed solidly on the yacht's deck.
His black leather dress shoes struck the deck with a heavy thud, the ominous sound making everyone's heart skip a beat.
The Fords were already on edge, but seeing Rowan board the ship drained the color from all their faces.
Agnes Townsend's pupils contracted. Panic instantly overriding her reason, she raised a handgun without thinking, aiming the muzzle straight at Rowan's chest. "Don't come any closer!" she shrieked. "One more step and I'll shoot!"
The maritime police officers boarding right behind Rowan reacted instantly. Service weapons were drawn from their holsters in a flash, multiple laser sights locking accurately onto Jasmine Ford, Agnes, and the rest of the group on deck.
Agnes's hand trembled violently, her previous ruthless arrogance evaporating. She knew perfectly well she couldn't outgun a squad of armed officers; resisting would only guarantee a worse fate.
Jasmine's tense shoulders slumped in defeat, the defiance in her eyes fading into a dull ash.
"We surrender," Jasmine said through gritted teeth, raising her hands first to signal she was giving up.
Tabitha was already paralyzed with fear, leaning heavily against Jonathan Ford as the two of them kept each other from collapsing.
No matter how unwilling she was, Agnes stared down the array of gun barrels and slowly loosened her grip. The pistol clattered onto the damp deck.
Elara Townsend, shivering uncontrollably, quickly threw her hands high in the air. Finn Ford emerged from the wheelhouse, and the entire group formally surrendered.
Rowan stormed into the main deck lounge and rushed straight for the lower-level restroom, but found it empty.
