"You're very welcome, and congratulations to you both!" Lyra said graciously, taking a fresh glass of wine from a passing waiter...
Although, Lyra thought to herself.
Zane isn't going to start calling me by a title too, is he?
God, please no...
Fortunately, Zane was naturally reserved. He just held his glass with a sincere expression. "Thank you both for taking the time to be here. Your gift was incredibly generous; Lena and I will truly remember this."
"It's nothing, just a small token," Lyra said. She was just about to clink glasses with Zane when a pair of warm, strong hands suddenly wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her firmly against him.
Seeing who it was, Lena smiled sweetly. "Rowan."
Rowan gave a slight nod. His eyes fell on Lyra's face as he smoothly plucked the whiskey glass from her slender fingers and clinked it against Zane's with a half-smile.
"She doesn't drink whiskey. I'll take this."
On the drive back, soft music filled the car. Pip sat on Rowan's lap, his long lashes resting against his cheeks, his little head tilted as he slept soundly against his father's chest. Rowan turned his head to look at his wife. Leaning against his shoulder, Lyra noted lazily, "Lena adapted to her new role perfectly. It didn't sound awkward at all."
"You don't like her?"
"She's actually really sweet."
Most importantly, Zane liked her, and that was all that mattered.
Rowan agreed. "It is a good match. Someone with Zane's personality needs a sharp, clever wife like her."
When they arrived at Blackwood Manor, they handed the baby over to the nanny. Lyra went to change out of her evening gown. When she came back out, Rowan had already taken off his suit jacket and rolled up his dress shirt sleeves. "We have some free time today. Let's watch a movie."
Since it was the weekend, the two of them headed to the home theater.
While Rowan was setting up the movie, Lyra suddenly turned her face toward him, a hint of teasing in her eyes. "Speaking of which, everyone thought you and Jasmine made a perfect match in the past. Since I stepped back and let you have her in this life, why didn't you end up with her?"
Rowan replied smoothly, "You can logically pick a business partner, but you can't force your heart to beat faster. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with someone who made me feel at ease—someone who brings me peace when she's near and drives me crazy when she's gone. Someone I just had to win over, to stay true to my own feelings..."
Speaking of which, Wesley asked skeptically, "Caleb's twins are only what, three or four years old?"
He had taken calls from Waylon himself. Why the hell was Waylon rambling like a lunatic about wanting to marry Caleb's daughter?
Wesley thought: How completely deranged can one person be?
Mr. Jameson just wanted to be Caleb's brother-in-law.
Waylon wanted to be his son-in-law?
Did that make Caleb the ultimate winner in life?
The rich really knew how to play twisted games...
At that thought, Wesley decided to drop it. The maniac was better off rotting overseas.
