The sleek car sliced smoothly through the heavy night. The cabin was dead silent, save for the low hum of the engine, wrapped in a suffocatingly tense atmosphere.
Lyra's chest was still tight with anger. She pressed the button to roll down the window just a crack, letting the cool night wind slip in and rustle the stray hairs by her ear.
Rowan turned slightly, his dark gaze resting on her exhausted profile. He reached out and gently ruffled her soft hair, his voice low and soothing. "My wife is irresistible."
Lyra didn't quite catch the words over the rush of the wind. She just turned her head slightly, her eyes distant and dazed.
The car pulled into Blackwood Manor. The staff quickly stepped forward to take their belongings, and Rowan guided Lyra inside with an arm around her shoulders.
The moment she stepped through the door, Lyra went straight upstairs to the nursery.
Pip had already been fed and was sleeping soundly in his crib, his tiny fists curled by his cheeks. His chest rose and fell in a steady, peaceful rhythm.
She tiptoed closer and whispered to the nanny keeping watch, "Did he cry while we were gone?"
The nanny kept her voice low. "He called for 'Mama' and 'Dada' a few times and kept pointing at the door to go look for you, but we distracted him with some picture books, and he was fine."
Relieved that her baby hadn't been fussy, the knot in Lyra's heart finally loosened. She turned quietly and left the nursery.
After giving the nanny a few brief instructions for the night, Rowan quickly followed her out, catching up to the gloomy Lyra in the master bedroom. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, letting her lean securely against his broad chest. His fingers gently smoothed back the hair the wind had tangled, and he pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head.
"Come on. Go take a shower. Wash all this mess away."
Lyra certainly wanted to shower, but she had no desire to share one with him tonight. "I'll wash by myself."
He pulled her into his embrace, tracing a path of burning kisses across her lips and down her neck...
Tonight, Rowan was more forceful than usual.
Afterward, Lyra was utterly limp. He scooped her up in his arms and carried her to the bathroom to clean up. By the time they returned, the maids had already changed the sheets.
Rowan lay down on his side, wrapping his arm securely around Lyra's waist, pulling her completely into his arms. Resting against Rowan's warm, broad chest, Lyra felt a lazy, pleasant ache in her limbs. Her eyelids were too heavy to lift, and listening to his steady, powerful heartbeat, she drifted off to sleep...
The next morning, Rowan quietly gazed at the peaceful, serene face of the woman in his arms. He brushed a strand of hair from her cheek, left a feather-light kiss on her skin, and quietly got out of bed.
In the next room, Pip was already awake. Having finished his morning bottle, he was on his stomach playing with a toy. Seeing his father push the door open, he immediately dropped it and reached out his chubby little arms, demanding to be held. Smiling, Rowan picked his son up and slowly headed downstairs for breakfast.
