On this side of the screen, Kayla jumped to her feet in sheer terror, instinctively screaming, "What's happening?!"
All the color drained from her face. She spun around toward the screen in a panic, only to see Rowan slowly stepping out from behind it. His posture was imposing, his expression unreadably cold.
"Rowan, what are you doing?! You promised me you wouldn't touch him!"
All trace of civility had vanished from Rowan's eyes, replaced by a razor-sharp disgust for the filth he had just uncovered. "The answer is already glaringly obvious."
"Waylon doesn't want you. He wants your daughter, Hazel."
Every fake excuse, every calculated manipulation masked as longing that Waylon had spouted—it all made perfect, sickening sense now. Rowan understood everything.
"You bitch! You brought him!" Waylon thrashed furiously against the table, screaming and cursing through the screen, his voice grating and unhinged. "Rowan! You set me up! You laid this trap from the start!"
Rowan looked at the screen. "You never gave a damn about Kayla. What you're really after is my wife's niece. You were reborn. When you died in your past life, Hazel must have been all grown up, right?"
Pinned brutally against the table, Waylon's eyes were bloodshot. His chest heaved violently as he dropped the gentle lover act. He shrieked at the top of his lungs, "That's right! In my past life, I waited in agony until Hazel turned eighteen! We were deeply in love, destined to spend our lives together! But you, Rowan, you had to interfere! Just as I was about to get everything I wanted, you dragged me back to this life, forcing me to suffer through those endless years all over again!"
His voice dripped with psychotic obsession as he repeated over and over, "I have to wait again... I have to endure all these years again..."
Blinding anger surged to her head, making her tremble. She stormed forward, grabbed the phone off the table, and hurled it violently against the wall. The device crashed hard, dropping to the floor in shattered pieces. The screen splintered, the casing broke apart—it was utterly destroyed.
The realization that she had nearly handed her own daughter over to a monster hit Kayla with crushing force. Her vision went black, and she collapsed forward, passing out cold on the hard floor.
Still seething with rage, Lyra stomped down hard, crushing the shattered remains of the phone under her heel.
Rowan wrapped his arms around her trembling body from behind. "Don't cry. Let's go home. Pip is waiting for us..."
