She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry novel Chapter 644

Once Victoria confirmed her unborn grandchild was out of immediate danger, she ordered her guards to drag the shell-shocked Caspian back to the Jameson Residence. She forced him to stand rigidly in the center of the cold marble foyer.

Caspian offered zero resistance. He stood perfectly still, his back stiff and unyielding.

Victoria's eyes were blazing red. The disappointment and fury she had suppressed for weeks finally erupted. She raised her hand and delivered a vicious slap across his cheek.

"This family poured every resource into raising you. We spent millions on you, and you took it all for granted without an ounce of gratitude. But Jasmine throws a few pennies your way, and you treat her like a savior? You were willing to risk everything for her—even holding a knife to the throat of a woman who is seven months pregnant!"

"You think our money is your birthright, but her spare change is an act of divine grace?" Victoria yelled, striking him hard on the shoulder again and again.

"You're with her now. Does she know you're the one who ordered the hit that nearly killed her?"

"You always say 'our family'," Caspian whispered, his voice deadened. "Am I not a Jameson? Or did you never actually see me as part of this family?"

Victoria's eyes turned lethal. "You carry the Jameson name. But have you ever acted like one?"

"I know you remember your life before you were four. I know you remember your biological mother running that rundown noodle shop, working herself to the bone. That's why you were drawn to that poor, struggling teacher, and later to Jasmine when she played the resilient victim."

"But did it ever occur to you that the money Jasmine used to 'help' you came from us? After you ran her over, I paid her ten million dollars to keep it quiet. She didn't have a dime to her name. Where do you think she got the money to play the generous patron with you?"

Caspian's entire body jerked violently, as if he had been struck by lightning.

Images flashed relentlessly through his mind: Jasmine in cheap, faded dresses, wiping down tables at the coffee shop, taking orders, smiling bravely through her supposed poverty, yet always managing to scrape together enough cash to help him out.

Victoria watched the color drain from his face, leaving it a sickly gray. "What's the matter? When it's our money, it's dirty, but when she hands it to you, it's noble?"

Completely shattered and drained of any will to fight, Caspian followed the butler out the door.

...

Lyra woke up to a nightmare. She wasn't allowed out of bed. Period.

The doctor informed her she would be on strict bed rest until the baby was born.

And the needles. Endless, daily injections of progesterone to keep her contractions at bay.

The terrifying reality of what had almost happened finally caught up to her. Tears welled in her eyes and spilled over, soaking into her pillow as she wept silently in the sterile hospital room.
