The moment Lyra took her seat, she immediately gave Rowan the boot. "You need to leave. You're not welcome in my family's home."
She stretched her arm across the empty chair next to her, stubbornly blocking it so Rowan couldn't sit down.
Caleb, sitting across the table, drawled mockingly. "Oh, let him sit, Lyra. Mr. Jameson used to look down on us so much he wouldn't even step foot in here for years. Even a New Year's phone call had to be forced out of him by his parents. Having him actually grace our table today is an absolute honor for the Fairchilds."
Delilah looked between the bickering siblings in utter confusion. "What has gotten into the two of you today?"
Kayla tugged at Caleb's sleeve. Earlier, she had been gushing over the couture dresses, limited-edition bags, and personal stylist Rowan had gifted Lyra, making Caleb look incredibly inadequate as a husband. Caleb hadn't said anything at the banquet, but clearly, he was still brooding over it and taking it out on Rowan now.
Andrea Nash felt a cold sweat prickle her scalp. She stood up quickly. "Mr. Jameson, you can have my seat."
After her massive screw-up earlier, Andrea was walking on eggshells, desperate not to cause trouble.
Rowan ignored her. He also completely ignored Lyra's blockade, casually lifting her arm off the chair and sliding into the seat as if he owned the place.
He picked up his fork with effortless grace, taking a bite. "The food is excellent tonight."
"Stop staring and eat, everyone," Delilah urged.
Caleb picked up his fork as the rest of the table finally began to dig in.
"Eat... eat..." Little Harry nodded enthusiastically, clutching his spoon and clumsily shoveling food into his mouth.
Caleb noticed that his son seemed to prefer Rowan over his own father. Even though Rowan was notoriously cold and intimidating, the toddler wasn't scared in the slightest, constantly reaching out his chubby little hands and begging Rowan for hugs.
"Just eat. Stop talking about dying at the dinner table," Lyra scolded, focusing on her plate.
After dinner, her body betrayed her as Rowan stood up, pulling her along with him. She gave a half-hearted tug against his grip, but there was no escaping his firm hold.
Once they were upstairs, Rowan instructed Mrs. Whittaker to pack their things. They were moving back to Blackwood Manor tonight.
"I don't want to go back," Lyra said, pressing her lips into a stubborn line.
"The threat that gave you nightmares is completely gone," Rowan said. "Those dangerous things will never happen again. You don't have to be afraid of the dark anymore."
He reached out, gently stroking the top of her head in a soothing rhythm. "Let's just go home tonight, alright?"
