The car drove smoothly all the way back to the Fairchild estate. Once it parked, Lyra turned to Rowan, her tone carrying an icy finality. "You need to leave. Starting tonight, you are no longer staying here."
She thought that would be the end of it.
Instead, Rowan brazenly ignored her, stepping out of the car right behind her. "All my clothes are here. I need to take a shower before I go anywhere. I feel disgusting covered in this."
Lyra leveled a freezing glare at him, refusing to believe that Blackwood Manor was completely devoid of his wardrobe.
Without waiting for her permission, Rowan strode right through the front door.
Hearing the commotion, Delilah hurried out of the living room. Pure panic still lingered on her face. The second she saw them, she practically collapsed in relief. "You practically gave me a heart attack today. I've been a nervous wreck, terrified they were going to lock you up."
Delilah gripped Lyra's hands tightly. "Your brother was pacing outside the precinct the whole time. He didn't leave until he saw Rowan driving you home."
Kayla stepped forward, her eyes fraught with worry. "What did the police say before they let you go?"
Exhaustion heavy in her bones, Lyra just shook her head. Before she could answer, Rowan spoke up. "There is no concrete evidence pointing to Lyra. The police released us to wait for updates. Everything is on hold until Jasmine wakes up from surgery and gives her statement."
Lyra frowned.
As her mother ushered her toward the bedroom, a horrifying realization hit her.
Jasmine despised her. The second she woke up—even if Lyra hadn't laid a finger on her—Jasmine would undeniably frame her for the fall.
Did Rowan honestly not see that?
Once inside the bedroom, Rowan stepped behind her to unfasten the rose choker from her neck. "Want to shower together?"
Lyra hesitated for only a second before quietly slipping out the back door.
The streetlights lining the affluent neighborhood flickered to life, casting a warm, hazy glow against the suffocating night. Waylon was leaning against his car, smoking. Through the curling plumes of smoke, his eyes locked onto her.
"I did all of this to protect Kayla," he said smoothly.
An overwhelming wave of mental exhaustion washed over Lyra. She shook her head. "Impossible. What does pushing Jasmine have to do with my sister-in-law?"
Waylon straightened up, his tone dropping into something ruthlessly sharp. "You saw the truth for yourself today, didn't you? The only reason the entire Jameson family formed a wall around you was because you are an incubator for their heir. It has absolutely nothing to do with you as a person."
"When forced to choose between you and Jasmine, Rowan will always, without hesitation, choose Jasmine."
"If I were you, I'd abort the baby, completely break free from these chains, and start my life over."
