Waylon's hands froze on his tie, the easygoing expression dropping from his face.
Eleanor pressed on, "Have you kept in touch with that little girl? How is she doing now?"
"I later found out she was promiscuous, casually flirting with every man she met," Waylon replied, his tone chillingly detached. "I despise people like that."
Eleanor immediately nodded in agreement. "We've already dealt with enough scandals in our own circles. A girl like that isn't worth holding onto. If her heart wanders, let her go..."
She waved her hand dismissively. "Hurry up and finish getting ready. Everyone is waiting downstairs."
...
Waylon made his way down, offering polite greetings to Alistair before drifting over to trade conversation with Rowan, Wyatt, and Leo. Soon enough, it was time for the banquet to officially begin.
At the tables, hushed gossip swept through the crowd.
"Ever since Lyra married Rowan, the Fairchild family practically sits at the head table with the Jamesons. Their social standing has skyrocketed."
"No kidding..." someone murmured in agreement.
Then, a few guests noticed Lyra was conspicuously absent from the main dining hall.
Catching Rowan as he descended the stairs, someone asked, "Where is your wife?"
"It's too loud down here, and the smell of smoke and alcohol would aggravate her pregnancy. I had a private, quiet lounge prepared for her upstairs."
Vivienne smirked. "Look at you, playing the doting father. You're constantly fussing over her."
Even Caleb rolled his eyes, pulling Rowan toward a chair. "Just sit down."
Delilah chimed in, "Rowan, Andrea is upstairs guarding her. You can relax and eat your meal in peace."
Upstairs, the kitchen staff had prepared a specialized menu catering to Lyra's pregnancy cravings. She sat in the serene, private room, quietly enjoying her dinner with Andrea by her side.
Halfway through the meal, a sudden chill bit into the air. Lyra shivered, instinctively rubbing her arms.
Andrea's sharp eyes caught the movement. "Are you feeling cold, Ma'am?"
"The temperature in the lounge dropped drastically, and Ma'am is feeling cold," Andrea quickly explained. "I'm heading out to grab her coat." With that, she sprinted toward the restaurant's entrance.
Despite the overwhelming din of the party, the words 'feeling cold' echoed like an alarm in Rowan's head.
Why would she be cold in this weather?
Caleb tugged at him again to sit, but Rowan completely ignored him. Without a word, he turned and marched straight for the stairs. His foot had barely hit the first step.
A woman's bloodcurdling scream shattered the air outside the building.
"Ah—!"
A split second later, a sickening thud echoed through the night—the horrific, unmistakable sound of flesh and bone smashing against pavement.
Rowan froze, yanking his foot back before sprinting toward the entrance. Every guest in the room whipped their heads toward the door, shock and terror splashing across their faces.
"What the hell was that sound?"
