In that split second, Andrea's mind had flashed to the worst-case scenario: a desperate man driven to the edge, lashing out as he was pulled up, aiming a kick right at her pregnant belly. If that happened, Rowan would kill them all.
Thankfully, the man just hung limply in the guards' grip, making no reckless moves.
His daughter's eyes flared. She screamed and fought to run toward them. "What are you doing?! How dare you treat my father like this! Haven't you taken enough from us?!"
Andrea kept her cool. "Ma'am, it's not good for you to get involved in these corporate disputes while pregnant. We'll let security handle escorting them off the premises."
Lyra stared at the sheer despair radiating from the father and daughter. "No," she said coldly.
"Call Rowan right now."
Just then, the low growl of a high-performance engine cut through the air. A black Bentley sped toward them and parked abruptly, while the neighborhood security detail finally rushed over to manage the situation.
The car door swung open, and Rowan stepped out. Still in his tailored suit, he radiated the aggressive, predatory aura of the boardroom.
His eyes locked onto Lyra, his brow furrowing instantly. "You just let her step out of the car?"
His face darkened to a thunderous scowl. Without a word, he strode up to the two bodyguards and slapped each of them hard across the face.
The Tate family flinched in terror. Seeing his explosive fury firsthand made them acutely aware that they had just provoked the ultimate apex predator.
Rowan turned his frigid gaze on the father and daughter. "I'll let you off for blocking the car today. But remember, this is your only warning."
His dark eyes swept over them menacingly. "If there is a next time—if you ever dare show up at Blackwood Manor to harass my wife and disturb her peace again—liquidating your company will be the least of your worries."
The middle-aged man trembled violently, stammering out a frantic string of apologies. Beside him, the girl choked back her sobs, lowering her head with a turbulent expression.
Andrea ushered Lyra safely onto the grounds of Blackwood Manor.
Glancing back, Lyra saw that the father and daughter had fallen completely silent, clearly realizing that begging Rowan was utterly pointless.
When she reached the second floor, Lyra checked the window. The gates were clear.
A few moments later, Rowan walked up beside her. "Did they scare you?"
Lyra frowned. "Do you have to be like this?"
"I just executed an acquisition based on standard business practices. I didn't deliberately target them," Rowan said defensively.
Lyra didn't even have the energy to argue. She hurried into her bedroom and locked the door behind her.
Rowan's Adam's apple bobbed. "Maybe I really was out of my mind back then."
"Yes," Lyra scoffed, a tragic smile twisting her lips. "You were out of your mind for your ex-girlfriend."
Rowan watched his wife dredge up the painful past again. "There has to be a misunderstanding," he reasoned.
"No. There's no misunderstanding."
More accusations.
Rowan desperately wished he had some sort of amnesia pill. He wouldn't hesitate to force it down her throat.
He gripped the back of her head, closing the distance until their noses were practically touching. His gentle tone suddenly dropped into a dark, commanding register.
"Be good, and stop working yourself up. When you're hurting and want to cry, do you think I feel any better? I'll let the Tate family off the hook. Just empty your head and go to sleep... for the baby's sake."
Lyra didn't say a word.
She shot him a look and lay back down, rolling onto her side to put as much distance between them as possible.
