Today was her scheduled prenatal checkup. Rowan's schedule was packed tight, but he still tried to carve out time to go with her, though Lyra adamantly refused.
Lyra finished her appointment at the private maternity clinic alone. On her way back, her phone rang right on cue—it was Rowan.
Through the receiver, the man asked about the results.
"Everything is fine. All the numbers look good," Lyra replied softly.
Andrea, sitting beside her, rested her chin in her hand. In reality, all of the test reports had already been forwarded directly to Mr. Jameson the second they were printed, yet he still insisted on hearing his wife confirm it herself.
Andrea casually glanced toward the intersection ahead, her eyes locking onto two figures standing right outside the gates of Blackwood Manor. They looked glaringly out of place.
One was a disheveled middle-aged man, accompanied by a young woman whose eyes were red from crying.
Lyra noticed them too and let out a soft sound of confusion.
"What is it?" Rowan asked.
"Nothing," Lyra quickly replied, and hung up.
The second she ended the call, the middle-aged man lunged right in front of their car. He collapsed onto the asphalt, pleading through the windshield toward the backseat where Lyra was sitting.
Lyra jumped in shock.
Andrea immediately went on high alert. Her hand slipped over the door lock, and she warned her in a tense, hushed voice, "Ma'am, do not get out of the car."
Lyra didn't get out, but she rolled down her window. "What's going on? What happened?"
The man pressed his forehead to the pavement. When he looked up, tears streamed down his face, and a dark bruise had already formed on his brow. His voice was raw as he pleaded, "Please, ma'am, save my family! Tate Enterprises has been completely bought out, our capital chain is severed, and the legacy my family spent generations building was wiped out overnight. I can't even afford to pay my employees severance."
"I know we can't fight him. I'm completely out of options. That's why I'm here blocking your way. I'm begging you to just put in a good word with Mr. Jameson. If he could just spare a single core asset, it would save us from losing absolutely everything."
Behind him stood his daughter, her eyes bloodshot as she clutched the hem of her shirt. She was biting her lip so hard it had turned white, tears streaming uncontrollably down her face.
A sense of familiarity washed over Lyra.
"Even if you stay here until dark, they're never going to pity us."
Her bloodshot eyes were filled with humiliation, despair, and powerless resentment.
Lyra felt a lump in her throat. "Please, stand up," she said softly. "Collapsing on the ground isn't going to fix anything."
But the man wasn't listening at all. He bowed so fiercely his forehead smacked against the concrete with a dull thud. "I know business is cutthroat, but we have a whole family depending on us. If they liquidate everything, we'll end up on the streets! I just need you to convince Mr. Jameson to show some mercy!"
Lyra turned to her bodyguards. "Help him up."
As she spoke, she stepped forward, reaching out to help him herself.
The two guards tensed. They lunged forward, grabbing the middle-aged man by both arms and forcefully hauling him to his feet, dragging him several steps back.
Andrea's heart raced. She immediately grabbed Lyra's arm, pulling her back and shielding her with her own body.
