The thought of carrying her child for nine grueling months, only to have the baby call Jasmine 'Mom,' was more than she could bear.
Her heart seized violently in her chest, and a creeping chill spread through her limbs.
An overwhelming, suffocating wave of despair crashed over her, and a sharp, dropping ache began to radiate through her abdomen.
"I... I don't feel well... I need to lie down."
Lyra's face turned completely ashen. She gripped the edge of the sofa, barely managing to keep herself upright.
Panic flared in Delilah's eyes. She rushed forward and grabbed her daughter's arm. "What's wrong? Are you okay? Lyra, lie back on the sofa. Just rest for a second."
Lyra's strength gave out, and she collapsed against the cushions. A terrifying sense of dread swallowed her whole, and her body tensed with an agonizing, ominous cramp.
"How do you feel? Should I call a doctor?" Delilah frantically grabbed a towel and wiped the cold sweat from her daughter's forehead. "Tell Mom where it hurts. Where is the pain?"
Lyra squeezed her eyes shut and weakly shook her head.
Seeing her respond, Delilah's racing heart slowed just a fraction, and she exhaled a shaky breath.
Just then, the sound of an arrival echoed from the main entrance. Delilah stood up to see who it was.
Rowan and Victoria had arrived, trailed closely by the butler, a driver, and his bodyguard Andrea Nash, all heavily laden with bags and boxes.
Victoria hadn't completely convinced Delilah to agree to the marriage yet, so she had come to smooth things over. "Delilah... knowing Lyra is pregnant and delicate, we went out of our way to gather some things for her. We brought imported caviar, premium organic supplements, and the finest truffles, all top-tier quality. They're perfect for nourishing her during the pregnancy..."
Delilah's mind was racing. "Come in, please."
Delilah was shaking uncontrollably. "What... what's going on? She was just fine a minute ago."
Rowan was already sprinting out the door with Lyra in his arms.
Andrea brought the car around in record time, and the butler wrenched the door open.
Rowan practically dove into the backseat with Lyra. The second the door clicked shut, Andrea floored the gas.
Rowan wrapped his arms securely around Lyra, protecting her from the bumps, while pulling out his phone to contact the emergency room.
He relayed her symptoms with clinical precision.
Sweat beaded on Rowan's forehead, but his voice remained dead steady. "The patient is sweating profusely and losing consciousness. It looks like... a threatened miscarriage. Have a VIP maternity suite and a full medical team waiting on standby."
