"But I want to keep him." Lyra looked up, her tone soft but unwavering. She just wanted her baby Pip back.
"Do you have any idea what it means to have a child out of wedlock?" Delilah's chest heaved with fury, every word grounded in harsh reality. "Our family will become the laughingstock of our social circle!"
She leaned forward, her anger shifting into desperate concern. "Listen to me. Don't gamble your entire life away on this. Let's go to the hospital."
"Mom, I truly love this baby. I don't want to lose him." Lyra rested a protective hand over her stomach. "Caleb has the twins, and I've always been so envious. I want a baby of my own, and I promise to love him with all my heart."
"But you can't just have a baby on your own!"
"Mom, I'm already married. Rowan and I got our Marriage Certificate. I'm not having a child out of wedlock."
"You're already married?" Delilah asked, completely blindsided. "When did this happen? How could you hide something so massive from the entire family?"
Lyra called for the housekeeper. "Martha, could you fetch my Marriage Certificate from the drawer in my bedroom?"
Martha was equally stunned, but she quickly hurried off and returned with the document.
Delilah opened it. Aside from the fact that they were both strikingly attractive, they genuinely looked like a match made in heaven.
"We took care of the paperwork a while ago," Lyra explained calmly. "It's all perfectly legal, and the baby is legitimate. It's not out of wedlock."
Delilah gripped the certificate, her emotions in a tangled mess. She was furious that her daughter had hidden such a massive life decision, but staring at the legal proof—and knowing she was going to have a grandchild—made her rigid stance impossible to maintain.
"Tabitha called me," Delilah finally admitted. "She said you were probably pregnant, which explained why the Jameson family's attitude shifted so drastically. Jasmine didn't lose to you. She lost to the child in your belly."
She desperately wanted to dismiss her mother's paranoia, but tiny, terrifying details began to click into place. Rowan had figured out she was pregnant so early on. The rushed Marriage Certificate. The abrupt change in the wedding plans. All the coincidences stacked together sent a violent chill down her spine.
Jasmine had literally taken a bullet for him.
How could he not love her?
Lyra couldn't bear to look down the barrel of that nightmare.
She was terrified that from the very beginning, she had been nothing more than a vessel to produce an heir.
If he truly saw her as an incubator, then once the baby was born, the immense power of the Jameson family would ensure she never even caught a glimpse of her child again.
