Meanwhile, at the Fairchild Holdings headquarters, Lyra was wrapping up a meeting. Seeing Quentin's utterly deflated expression, she couldn't help but laugh and tease him.
"Since you didn't get to meet him, why not just pick a new idol?"
Quentin had waited an entire afternoon yesterday, holding out until dinner time, but he never got to see his hero. His high hopes had crashed into bitter disappointment.
He looked up, confused. "How did you know he didn't show?"
Lyra's heart skipped a beat, but she covered it up quickly. "A friend of mine went too. He waited just like you and got nothing. He said he's done being a fan—that someone like that isn't worth the hype."
York Somerset chimed in with a laugh, backing her up.
"Exactly, Quentin. Stop obsessing over him. The guy probably didn't even plan on showing up."
"There are plenty of brilliant people out there. Why fixate on an idol who can't even keep a promise?"
Lyra nodded vigorously in agreement.
"Honestly, if you met him, you'd probably realize he's nothing special. You might even think he's a jerk."
She remembered the few times Quentin had crossed paths with Rowan in person. He hadn't seemed particularly awe-struck. He clearly didn't realize how "dazzling" Rowan supposedly was.
Quentin visibly disagreed, muttering defensively, "He probably had an emergency. Missing one event doesn't mean he breaks promises. I'm not just going to swap idols."
He paused, then looked at Lyra with absolute sincerity.
"Even if he turns out to be totally ordinary in person, it wouldn't change how much I respect his work. You just don't get it, Miss Fairchild."
Lyra's mouth twitched.
Quentin clearly had no idea what a terrible person Rowan Jameson actually was.
...
That single sentence acted like a match to a powder keg of repressed fury.
If Rowan had been standing in front of her right then, she would have slapped him across the face without a second thought.
Pushed past her breaking point, Lyra unleashed her anger into the receiver, her voice practically vibrating with rage. "Drop the act, Rowan. We ended things three years ago."
Her voice trembled slightly as she drove the point home. "The moment you walked away with Jasmine, we were completely done."
Dead silence fell over the line.
Rowan didn't say a word. The heavy quiet stretched between them like a physical weight.
Taking a deep breath, Lyra delivered her final, uncompromising threat.
"If you keep harassing me like this, I swear to God I'll build a massive public toilet right across the street from the Jameson Group headquarters."
