"We have nothing to talk about," Rowan said coldly, not missing a beat.
Jasmine's beautiful eyes widened in disbelief. "What did I ever do to deserve this from you?!"
"Stealing someone else's credit isn't a crime to you?"
Rage erupted in Jasmine's chest. "Lyra told me to take the credit!" she screamed, her voice shaking with suppressed fury. "When I got to the room, the door was wide open, and she was long gone! Did you really think she ran away because of me? She abandoned you first!"
Rowan's footsteps faltered for a fraction of a second before he continued toward the glass doors.
Seeing the CEO's lethal expression, the security guards immediately swarmed Jasmine, aggressively shoving her away from the entrance.
Later that evening, Lyra clocked out and headed to her car. Before she even reached her parking spot, she spotted Rowan's imposing vehicle idling nearby.
Panic slammed into her. She spun around and sprinted for the elevator. Her premium parking spot was right next to the doors, and she prayed the elevator was still on the basement level.
She didn't make it far. Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed behind her. Just as the elevator doors pinged open, Rowan's large hand clamped around her wrist, yanking her backward. She thrashed wildly, fighting with everything she had. Losing his patience, he bent down and effortlessly swept her into his arms.
The ground vanished beneath Lyra's feet. Instinctively, she locked her arms around his neck, her brow furrowing as she kicked and squirmed. "Let me go!"
Rowan ignored her protests, unceremoniously dumping her into the passenger seat. As he slammed the door shut, his deep voice vibrated with constrained frustration. "Playing disappearing acts again? Not even replying to my texts?"
"Trying to run away again?"
Lyra glared at him. "I was jealous. You went on a date with Sylvia. She's gorgeous, sweet, and considerate. Anyone can see she's the perfect candidate to be Mrs. Jameson."
She paused, deliberately creating distance between them. "Let's just take a month apart to cool off."
She reached for the door handle, but Rowan had already rounded the hood and slid into the driver's seat. He seized her wrist, pinning her hand down.
Lyra shot him a defiant look. "Fine, a week."
Furious, Lyra immediately reached for the door handle of the moving car.
Rowan snatched her hand. "Enough. If we die in a crash, the media will splash our names everywhere as illicit lovers."
"Unless we tie the knot."
"Aunt Delilah is definitely hoping you settle down soon."
Lyra stared at him, utterly paralyzed by the sheer audacity of his words.
"Parents just want what's best," Rowan continued smoothly. "Caleb is married with kids. Naturally, you're next on their list. They just want you to be safe."
A harsh, mocking laugh ripped from Lyra's throat. "You're lecturing me about what parents want?"
Her words dripped with venom. "Because you've certainly never done anything to piss your own parents off, right?"
