She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry novel Chapter 426

Lyra felt like her fingers were going to snap under his grip. She cracked the window open, letting the hot evening breeze wash over her as she exhaled a shaky breath.

The air in the car was thick and stifling. Beads of sweat gathered along her delicate neck and collarbone, slipping down into her shirt.

Rowan covered her hand with his own.

"Aunt Delilah has always thought I was the perfect son-in-law. Why don't we just give her what she wants?"

Lyra yanked her hand away. "She has never thought that."

Rowan suddenly remembered it was Arthur Fairchild who had always championed him, but that was a raw nerve he couldn't afford to touch with Lyra.

"Alright, calm down," Rowan coaxed, smoothing over the tension.

Before she knew it, they arrived at Blackwood Manor. The estate was already staffed with a brand-new fleet of employees.

Dinner was an extravagant spread. They ate in suffocating silence.

Halfway through the meal, Rowan suddenly spoke. "I was wrong before. I was blind. I didn't see that you were the one who saved me... Let's just live well together from now on."

Lyra choked, spraying her sip of water directly into his face. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. "Not a chance."

Rowan calmly picked up a napkin, patting his face dry without a change in expression. Once finished, he simply went back to eating.

The massive dining room fell back into a dead, suffocating silence, broken only by the faint clinking of silverware against porcelain.

After dinner, Rowan headed to his study to review some documents, telling Lyra to find something to entertain herself with.

The moment he vanished down the hallway, Lyra snatched her purse and marched straight for the front door. But the maids guarding the foyer immediately stepped forward, politely blocking her path.

"Three years ago, you couldn't bear to let me die. That's why you saved me," he demanded. "So why are you rejecting me now? Why do you fight me at every turn?"

It was a long story. If she had just been given her second chance at life one day earlier, none of this would be happening.

"Do you see the fish pond out there?" Lyra pointed toward the courtyard through the floor-to-ceiling windows, a bitter sneer twisting her lips.

"The last time I was here, Jasmine was parading around like the lady of the house. Lucas Chavez shoved me straight into that freezing water. And you? You stood there and coldly told me to get the hell out."

Her chest heaved with suppressed rage. "Fine. You wanted me out, right? I'm leaving. From now on, we have nothing to do with each other. Don't ever look for me again!"

Rowan immediately caught her arm, his grip tightening. "The next time you come here, that pond will be paved over."

"Let the past go, Lyra. Stop fighting me."
