After a brief silence, she stepped aside, letting the two of them leave.
...
Meanwhile, Lyra was still working at Fairchild Holdings.
Right before closing time, Secretary Montgomery walked in. "Mr. Jameson is here."
Lyra hadn't expected Rowan to actually show up at her company. Over the past couple of days, even though she had changed her number, he had still managed to call her. She had brushed him off a few times and then ignored him altogether.
But after successfully driving Jasmine up the wall, Lyra was starting to get cold feet when it came to dealing with Rowan.
Seeing the man walk in wearing a sharp, charcoal suit, she had no choice but to wave her secretary out.
Once the door clicked shut, she finally looked at him. "Could you stop coming to my office? It's not going to look good if people see you here."
Rowan felt like she was treating him like some casual fling—hot one second, freezing the next. Still, he asked, "Let's go get dinner."
"I already ate."
It was barely past five; there was no way he believed that. His expression darkened. "What is this? You use me and then toss me aside? The silent treatment?"
Lyra thought to herself that she had only slept with him a few times to get back at Jasmine. They were never officially dating, so how could they be breaking up? But she didn't want to provoke him. "No..."
She started tidying up her desk, moving at a glacial pace. "I've just been really busy lately."
"Family stuff, work stuff... it's a lot."
Rowan watched her deliberately keeping her distance. He sat down on the sofa, tapping his fingers against the armrest, his expression unreadable.
Right in the middle of this standoff, a knock sounded, and Quentin opened the door. Lyra instinctively froze, her eyes darting toward the sofa, looking incredibly guilty.
"Miss Fairchild, heading out for dinner?" Quentin asked with a smile. Then he noticed the man on the sofa and paused. "Mr. Jameson is here too? Care to join me?"
Lyra's heart skipped a beat. She quickly interjected, "No, thanks. We actually have other plans."
"Do you want me to get on my knees and beg?" Rowan demanded.
Realizing she had just told Quentin they had plans, backing out now would look even more suspicious. She had no choice but to follow him.
While waiting for the elevator, Lyra made Rowan go down first, opting to take a separate car.
She quickly texted Quentin. [Did you want to ask him about something?]
Quentin replied: [Yeah. Their new Cloud-Whale AI is really impressive. I just wanted to pick his brain about it.]
Lyra breathed a sigh of relief. As long as it wasn't anything else. [Write down your questions and send them to me. I'll ask him for you.]
But once they were seated in the private dining room at The Sapphire Room...
Lyra had barely asked her first question when Rowan cut her off. "It's date night. No talking about work."

The readers' comments on the novel: She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry
What Rowan did in his past life was horrific, and I’m not excusing it, but he truly did everything he could in his second life to repent and atone for what he did to Lyra. At some point, there has to be room for forgiveness and grace. If someone spends their entire life trying to make amends and become a better person, then what does redemption mean if we never allow them a chance to be forgiven? Even someone who has done terrible things deserves the possibility of redemption, and honestly, I want Rowan to be happy too!...
