A drive that should have taken over twenty minutes was slashed to barely ten, thanks to Andrea's flawless, aggressive maneuvering. The car screeched to a halt right in front of the mall.
Lyra's chest was tight with panic. The moment the car stopped, she threw the door open and sprinted inside. She cursed herself for ignoring Kayla's desires. Kayla had mentioned multiple times that she wanted to buy gifts for the babies herself, but the family had constantly urged her to shop online, terrified of her navigating crowded public spaces. Kayla, however, had clearly been determined to experience the joy of picking out newborn clothes in person.
As Lyra dashed into the massive atrium, she frantically dialed Martha's number.
Martha picked up, quickly confirming they were in the maternity section on the third floor. But before she could finish her sentence, a piercing scream shattered the audio, followed by the chaotic sounds of a struggle.
"Wh-What's happening?"
Lyra flinched violently. Every drop of color vanished from her face, leaving her skin starkly pale. Her voice trembled uncontrollably. Kayla absolutely could not have an accident right now.
She sprinted toward the escalators, screaming into the phone, but there was only the sound of frantic shuffling on the other end. No one answered.
Lyra tore up the stairs to the third floor. Her phone buzzed relentlessly with incoming calls from Delilah and Liam, but she ignored them all.
The moment she stepped off the escalator, the horrifying scene burned itself into her retinas. Kayla was collapsed on the gleaming tile floor. A terrifying pool of warm crimson was already spreading rapidly from beneath her, blindingly bright under the fluorescent lights.
Jasmine stood a few feet away, her expression dark and unreadable, the atmosphere around her suffocatingly cold.
Beside her, Elara Townsend was waving her hands in a frantic panic. "It wasn't me! I swear I didn't do it!"
Waylon Grayson sprinted into view, his face twisted in absolute fury. Without a second of hesitation, he delivered a brutal kick to Elara's stomach, sending her flying several feet across the floor.
He immediately dropped to his knees and gathered Kayla into his arms.
Lyra stared at the spreading pool of blood, the vicious curse Jasmine had spat in the past echoing in her mind: *Your Fairchild bloodline ends here.*
Lyra's face paled even further.
"Based on our location, he definitely took her to Mercy West Hospital," Andrea deduced calmly, throwing the car into gear.
Lyra nodded sharply, her hands shaking as she dialed Caleb's number. "Caleb, get to Mercy West right now. Kayla's there. She might be having the babies early. I don't know what happened... just get here! Drive safely!"
She hung up and immediately called her mother to redirect her to the hospital.
When Lyra sprinted through the sliding doors of Mercy West, the nurses confirmed a hemorrhaging pregnant woman had just been rushed into emergency surgery. Lyra bolted toward the operating wing and instantly spotted Waylon standing in the corridor.
He looked absolutely dreadful. The heavy steel doors to the OR were shut tight, the red surgical light glaring above them.
Kayla was already on the table.

The readers' comments on the novel: She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry
What Rowan did in his past life was horrific, and I’m not excusing it, but he truly did everything he could in his second life to repent and atone for what he did to Lyra. At some point, there has to be room for forgiveness and grace. If someone spends their entire life trying to make amends and become a better person, then what does redemption mean if we never allow them a chance to be forgiven? Even someone who has done terrible things deserves the possibility of redemption, and honestly, I want Rowan to be happy too!...
