Martha and Mr. Lawrence burst through the hospital doors shortly after, both panting heavily.
With red, tear-filled eyes, Martha recounted the horrifying ordeal to Lyra. It turned out Jasmine's cousin, Elara, had deliberately cornered Kayla. Elara maliciously taunted her, claiming that Caleb had always been deeply in love with Jasmine, and only settled for Kayla because he couldn't have the woman he truly wanted.
Upon hearing those venomous words, Kayla had been instantly overwhelmed by fury and heartbreak. A heated argument erupted. During the chaos, Martha's phone had rung, and in the brief moment she turned away to answer it, she lost sight of who made the physical move. The next second, Kayla was collapsing onto the hard tile, blood spilling everywhere.
Lyra clenched her fists tightly, a suffocating wave of anger washing over her as her temples throbbed relentlessly. Every instinct in her body screamed to completely obliterate the Ford family and drive them out of Seaborne for good.
Standing beside her, Andrea noticed Lyra's deathly pale face and the intense tension radiating from her. "Are you holding up okay, Lyra?"
Lyra gave a stiff shake of her head. Just then, a frantic figure sprinted down the corridor. Caleb had his suit jacket slung haphazardly over one arm, his forehead drenched in sweat as he raced toward them.
"Caleb..." Lyra hurried forward to meet him.
Caleb's eyes were wild with panic. "How is she? Is she okay?"
"She's still in surgery..."
Before Lyra could finish, Delilah and Liam rushed in behind him. Lyra quickly grabbed her mother's arm, murmuring soft words of comfort. The hallway was entirely consumed by the heavy, anxious wait of the Fairchild family.
Seeing that Lyra was fully surrounded by her relatives, Andrea quietly slipped away.
It was only then that Lyra noticed Waylon was still standing in the corner.
She paused, then walked over to him. "Thank you for what you did today, Waylon. My family is here now. You can head home if you have things to do."
Waylon didn't move an inch.
Lyra frowned slightly.
Before she could say another word, the heavy doors of the operating room swung open. The lead surgeon stepped out, pulling down his mask, and Lyra instantly forgot about Waylon.
"I will," Caleb said, carefully transferring the tiny infant into Lyra's arms so he could make the call. Lyra stiffened in pure panic, terrified to even breathe too hard as she awkwardly held the feather-light bundle.
Watching her struggle, Waylon stepped closer. "Do you want me to hold him?"
Lyra immediately shook her head. If she didn't know how to hold a newborn, what made him think he did?
The doctor interrupted kindly. "Because they're twins and were delivered slightly early, their birth weights are low and their immune systems are a bit delicate. To be safe, we need to move them to the incubators for a few days of observation."
Hearing this, Delilah and Lyra carefully handed the infants back to the nurses, watching anxiously as they were wheeled away.
When Lyra finally turned around, Waylon was already gone.
Shortly after, Kayla was transferred to a private recovery suite. She was still deep in a medically induced sleep, and Caleb refused to leave her side.
Kayla's parents arrived in a frantic rush soon after. When Kayla eventually woke up and they learned just how close they had come to losing her, her mother held her and wept. Afterward, they sat quietly in the room alongside Caleb, fully dedicated to her care.
