That name was like a fly buzzing around her head—inescapable and thoroughly annoying. Shera raised her voice slightly, immediately shutting down the forced intimacy. Her face remained entirely expressionless. "That won't be necessary. I don't think we're close enough for that, and I highly doubt we ever will be."
She had absolutely no interest in befriending her husband's mistress. She was getting a divorce, not handing in a two-week notice. Why did they need a handover meeting?
Shera's biting words froze the smile on Helga's face, leaving her completely speechless.
Shera studied her with a look of mild amusement. The woman standing before her was dressed in a pristine white dress, her long hair cascading down her back, her large eyes bright and innocent. With her petite frame and slender figure, she looked fragile enough to evoke a protective instinct in anyone.
Right now, Helga's brows were knit together, her lips pressed tightly as she struggled to figure out how to respond to such a direct, aggressive rejection.
Her pitiful act actually left Shera feeling exasperated. She honestly wished the woman would just act like a proper villain, grab her by the collar, and accuse her of being a homewrecker stealing her place. It would have been far less insufferable than this hesitant, stammering display.
After a long, uncomfortable silence, Helga finally spoke. "Are you and Caden... okay? Is there some kind of problem between you two?"
She was probing. Did she know about the impending divorce, or was she just fishing for information?
Shera never gave straight answers to questions like these. Instead, she tossed the ball right back.
"What do you think, Ms. Sutton?"
Helga shifted awkwardly. "I just... you two don't really act like a married couple."
Shera replied smoothly, "And how exactly should a married couple act?"
When Helga lowered her head and remained silent, Shera lost the last of her patience. She was about to walk away when Helga suddenly blocked her path.
"Actually, I came out here to apologize to you."
“Excuse me?”
Helga continued, "I know Caden taking Professor Shawcross to Germany took resources that were meant for you, and I feel incredibly guilty about it."
Shera stared at her, her eyes as calm as a placid lake, but her hands slowly balled into tight fists at her sides.
"I know this whole ordeal has probably caused a rift between you two, but he only did it because he was worried sick. I want to apologize on his behalf."
