"Preston?!" Dominic barked.
On the other end of the line, Preston Whitmore recognized the voice instantly, realizing Dominic was at the Royce Group.
"Why the hell are you answering Melanie's phone?" Dominic demanded.
A faint, mocking chuckle came through the speaker. "I'm her private assistant now. Why wouldn't I answer her phone?"
Dominic let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. That made sense. If Preston was her assistant, it was perfectly normal for him to field her calls.
"I need to speak to your boss. Put Melanie on," Dominic ordered, slipping into his usual authoritative tone.
"She can't come to the phone right now," Preston replied smoothly. His voice was as steady and captivating as always, carrying an intimidating aura that made Dominic shiver despite the distance.
Dominic cleared his throat. "Why not? What's wrong with her?"
"She's asleep."
The answer was so quick and absolute that Dominic was momentarily stunned. "What?" It was the middle of the day. Why would Melanie be sleeping? "She..."
"She's sleeping," Preston cut in, his tone razor-sharp. "At my place."
The receptionist watched in delight as Dominic's face turned a sickly shade of green. She slapped a hand over her mouth but still let out a loud snort of laughter.
