Dominic Hale arrived at the Royce Group only to find that Melanie Royce wasn't there.
"Where did your boss go?" he demanded of the receptionist, his tone clipped and impatient.
The receptionist, of course, knew exactly who Dominic was, and she didn't think highly of him. It wasn't just because he was Melanie's ex-husband. Back when their divorce had made headlines, dragging both their names through the mud, everyone at the Royce Group had learned that Dominic was a cheating bastard who had fathered a child with his own foster sister. From a moral and ethical standpoint, he was the lowest of the low.
The entire scandal had actually turned the receptionist into a massive fan of Melanie. She admired how the woman had boldly orchestrated a very public divorce, leaving her toxic ex and his wretched family utterly ruined. For a while, when the Hale family collapsed and Dominic hit rock bottom, the receptionist had felt a sense of cosmic justice. Sadly, that satisfaction was short-lived. Dominic had somehow managed to turn his luck around, latching onto the powerful Lockridge Group. Now, he was climbing the corporate ladder faster than ever.
"God really must be blind," the receptionist muttered under her breath. Seeing Dominic standing before her in a crisp, expensive suit, looking every bit the polished executive, made her want to gag.
"Hey, I asked you a question. What are you whispering about?" Dominic's attitude soured further, clearly picking up on her disdain.
"Sir, just because you ask a question doesn't mean I'm obligated to answer. Who exactly are you?" she retorted.
Dominic bristled, infuriated by her insolence. "You don't know who I am? Take a good look at my face!" he snapped, pointing a finger at himself, his eyes wide with indignation.
She scoffed. "Sorry. Doesn't ring a bell."
"Doesn't ring a bell?" Dominic yelled, his temper flaring. "I'm your boss's ex-husband! Do you understand? Her ex-husband!"
The receptionist covered her ears to block out his shouting. "I heard you! You're just an ex. And even an ex can't go waltzing into Ms. Royce's office without an appointment."
"Then tell me where she went and why she isn't at work."
