Although Melanie hadn't voiced a single thought, Preston read the wicked gleam in her eyes and easily guessed exactly what was running through her head.
"Are you really that eager to see me make a fool of myself?"
Preston asked in a low murmur.
"Being scared is just human nature. How is that making a fool of yourself?"
Melanie laughed, giving his ribs a gentle nudge with her elbow. Her curiosity got the better of her.
"So, are you actually scared of ghosts or not?"
"I guess you'll just have to wait and see."
Preston and Melanie led the way to the entrance, with Daphne and Everett trailing close behind.
They were grouped with four other strangers, making an eight-person team to brave the haunted attraction.
The Abyssal Asylum was famous for its massive, interconnected narrative design.
While standard theme parks usually offered standalone haunted houses with single themes, this one was entirely different.
This was a continuous nightmare.
Five distinct, massive zones were arranged in a sprawling ring around a central courtyard, which featured a colossal, neon-green skull spewing a waterfall of blood.
And once they crossed the threshold, there were no emergency exits. They had to survive all five zones in one grueling run.
The five zones were immersive, nightmarish simulations.
The first was an Abandoned Hospital; the second, a Murder Hotel; the third, a Cannibal Village; the fourth, a Graveyard Labyrinth; and the finale was a Zombie Siege.
Just reading the names on the map was enough to send a chill down anyone's spine.
What made it worse was that every single zone was crawling with live scare actors.
It was safe to say that eighty percent of the park's attendees bought tickets strictly for the adrenaline rush of this specific attraction.
While waiting in line, Daphne had been bouncing on her heels, buzzing with nervous excitement.
But the absolute second they stepped into the suffocating gloom of the first zone, her bravado shattered.
She clamped fiercely onto Everett's arm, her face going rigid with sheer terror.
The other strangers in their group weren't faring any better. Some of them were already shrieking before they had even seen a single monster.
Fortunately, the two leading the pack were entirely unfazed.
