The words "still have feelings" struck a nerve deep inside her.
Shawn was staring at her unblinkingly.
His hair was a striking platinum, and his eyes were an unusually pale shade.
She couldn't shake the feeling that his so-called pursuit was just a smokescreen to fish for information.
He might have looked harmless, but the predatory gleam in his eyes spoke volumes.
She suddenly flashed a brilliant smile.
"I defend him because he's gorgeous... a face like that gets a free pass."
As soon as she said it, she watched him pout like a petulant child.
"Angel, I don't like hearing that. Are you saying I'm not good-looking?"
"Dye your hair back to a normal color, then we'll talk."
Her comment instantly wiped the wicked smirk right off his face.
"So you actually thought I dyed it..."
She paused, slightly taken aback.
The platinum color was perfectly even, with a slight ashy undertone. If it wasn't dyed, was it natural?
While she was puzzling over this, she caught Preston out of the corner of her eye, furiously typing a text.
The second he lowered his phone, Shawn's rang.
The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.
But he answered it anyway.
"Hey, are you the guy trying to rent my place? Look, since we haven't signed the lease yet, it's not a breach of contract... but I can't rent it to you anymore! I just sold the property. You'll have to find somewhere else!"
The landlord dumped the news in one breath and hung up immediately.
Because he hadn't pressed the phone tightly to his ear, she managed to overhear most of the loud conversation.
In unison, both her and Shawn's gazes snapped directly to Preston.
"This was your doing, wasn't it?"
Shawn demanded, glaring at him.
Preston remained exactly as he always was: expressionless, cold, and utterly composed.
Half of her face instantly swelled up, burning with searing pain.
Clutching her burning cheek, she stared at him in absolute shock.
"Useless! You can't even handle a simple task."
It wasn't until he spat out the details that she realized the apartment she had tried to secure for him had just been bought out from under them by Preston.
"Why didn't you just buy the damn place outright in the first place? Why bother renting!"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Sterling..."
Slapped and publicly humiliated, she had no choice but to swallow her pride and apologize.
"Get on the phone with building management right now. Find out if there are any other empty units in this complex, for sale or for rent. This time, just buy it."
It wasn't like he was short on cash.
"Right away..."
She immediately dialed the management office.
However, as she made call after call, the color drained from her face, leaving her looking increasingly panicked.
