Preston said it with such absolute conviction that Melanie didn't even process it at first.
A moment later, the weight of his words finally hit her.
"Who wants to manage your money! We don't even have a relationship anymore..."
She muttered, turning her head to stare out the window.
Just then, his deep, magnetic voice drifted into her ears.
"What do you mean, no relationship? Aren't you and I... business partners? If you don't help keep an eye on my finances, what happens if the business goes under?"
Surprised by his logic, she turned back.
"So that's what you meant?"
"What else would I mean?"
He suddenly glanced at her, their eyes locking.
She could clearly see a mischievous gleam in his gaze.
"What did you think I meant?"
Feeling thoroughly teased, a spark of irritation flared in her chest.
"Just drive and stop talking."
Reluctantly pulling his gaze away, a faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.
The temperature in the car seemed to spike, and she suddenly felt a bit flushed.
Preston dropped her off at her place.
It was no longer Rosevale Heights.
She knew the unfinished apartment next door to hers had been undergoing renovations recently.
It had to be Preston, preparing to move in once it was done.
She had considered breaking her lease and finding a new place.
But no matter where she moved, he would undoubtedly follow, so there was really no point.
The moment she stepped out of the elevator with Preston, she spotted several men in moving uniforms hauling furniture.
"Your place is finished?"
She asked him, only to see his brow furrowed tightly as he stared straight ahead.
"Angel!"
"Mr. Whitmore, since Angel already dumped you, exactly what right do you have to stand in my way?"
The question threw Preston into a brief silence.
Just as he was about to speak, Shawn suddenly cut him off.
"Don't tell me you were going to use the 'business partner' excuse?"
A highly unsettling, wicked smirk spread across his youthful face.
"Did you forget that I also have a contract with the Royce Group? I'm her business partner too! We're on equal footing here."
Every word out of his mouth was clearly designed to provoke Preston.
"It's not the same."
She stepped out from behind Preston, jerking her thumb toward the man beside her.
"He's also my ex-boyfriend! Are you?"
Shawn's smirk instantly froze.
It was the first time he'd ever heard "ex-boyfriend" used as a flex.
"Angel, I'm just curious... you dumped him, so why are you so quick to defend him? Don't tell me... you still have feelings for him?"
