The necklace slipped from Melanie's grasp.
Before she could even turn her head, the person standing behind her clasped the jewelry around her neck.
The precious metal and jewels felt like ice against her skin.
Yet, inexplicably, a flush of heat washed over her.
At that moment, Preston stepped out from behind her.
Their eyes met. Preston's predatory gaze instantly made her feel a heavy, suffocating pressure.
She immediately averted her gaze, trying to hide her guilty conscience.
When had Preston arrived?
She wondered silently.
She had no idea how much of the conversation between her and Tessa he had overheard.
But regardless, he definitely knew by now that she had returned all the jewelry he had previously gifted her to Tessa.
Would he be upset?
The thought suddenly popped into her head.
Whatever. They were broken up anyway; so what if he was mad?
She took a deep breath to steady herself.
Seeing that she refused to even look at him, Preston frowned slightly and spoke.
"I'm here to pick up my grandmother."
As soon as the words left his mouth, Tessa smacked him on the forehead.
"Do I look like I don't have a driver or bodyguards? Why would I need you to pick me up?"
"I..."
Preston was momentarily speechless, instinctively shooting a glance at Melanie.
He couldn't exactly say... he had come specifically to pick her up, could he?
"You take Melanie home! Her assistant already drove her car back."
"Tessa, it's fine. I can just grab a cab."
Melanie's blatant rejection caused Preston's already serious expression to darken like a brewing storm.
Then, Tessa smacked him again.
"Is that face of yours just for show? Smile a little! Who are you trying to intimidate with that scowl every single day!"
Melanie almost laughed out loud at Tessa's words.
She knew the older woman was telling Preston to stop giving her attitude.
But looking back on their first reunion after four years, his expression had been even more severe than it was now!
If he was so dead set on taking her home, couldn't they have just sat in the back together?
Just like that, Preston became her personal cab driver.
Shaking her head in disbelief, she climbed inside.
After a brief moment of hesitation over whether to take the back or the passenger seat, she finally settled into the front.
The car glided smoothly down the road as she turned to him with burning curiosity.
"What on earth did you say to that driver to make him just give you his car?"
"Nothing much."
Preston replied calmly.
"I offered him a couple of hundred thousand dollars to let me borrow it for one ride."
Melanie sat frozen in shock.
"Are you seriously the head of Stellaris PharmaTech?"
"Hmm?"
"Throwing money around like that, even the deepest trust fund would run dry eventually, wouldn't it?"
"Which is exactly why I need you to manage my finances."
