"Mr. Sterling... the management office said..."
"Said what!"
"They said every single unsold or available rental unit in the entire complex was just bought by Preston Whitmore."
He was genuinely stunned by the news.
"He's actually going this far to block me..."
A humorless, incredulous laugh escaped his lips.
But at the same time, it made the game infinitely more entertaining.
"Mr. Sterling, what do we do now?"
The moment the words left her mouth, his hand shot out and clamped down hard on her throat.
"If you have to ask me everything, what the hell do I keep you around for? Huh?"
She gasped wildly for air, her face rapidly turning a terrifying shade of blue as she clawed at his grip.
"Oh, right, you do have one use. You're good in bed."
He suddenly yanked his hand back, releasing her.
She collapsed, gasping greedily for air and coughing violently.
"Forget it. Let's head back to the club."
He brushed past her, marching toward his car without a second glance.
She scrambled to keep up, fighting back tears of humiliation.
Even though she had just been slapped, degraded, and nearly choked to death.
She actually felt a twisted sense of gratitude toward Preston.
Because he had effectively stopped her boss from becoming Melanie's neighbor.
Upstairs.
Preston stood by the window.
He had watched the entire chaotic scene unfold down below.
"What are you looking at so intently?"
Melanie pulled two bottles of Lychee Spritz from the fridge.
Even though she knew she needed to keep her distance from him, he had technically just bailed her out and chased away the nuisance that was Shawn. Inviting him in for a quick drink seemed like the least she could do.
But ever since stepping inside, he had been rooted to the window, staring at the view.
It wasn't exactly Rosevale Heights; the scenery here was nothing special.
His voice carried an overwhelming, dominant weight.
She felt as if a heavy boulder were resting on her chest, making it nearly impossible to breathe.
Even though there was practically zero space left between them, she could still feel him pushing closer, inch by deliberate inch.
"How exactly do you plan on maintaining it?"
Unable to formulate an answer, she stayed silent, instinctively turning her face away from him.
"You know perfectly well the man is dangerous."
Catching what sounded like a hint of blame in his husky voice, she whipped her head back, glaring right at him.
"And you know perfectly well I'm only doing business with him to figure out what his actual agenda is."
Holding her defiant stare, he could see the angry, defensive fire burning in her eyes.
He let out a slow breath, his voice softening just a fraction, though his tone remained dead serious.
"In the past, I didn't stop you because you had me by your side. You allowed me to protect you."
"But now... you constantly push me away. How do you expect me not to worry?"
"If... you absolutely insist on dealing with him, then hire me as your personal bodyguard."
