To him, she was absolutely perfect.
Anything more would be too heavy; anything less would be too frail. Jaxson was obsessed with her body back then.
"You're fine."
He loved the way her soft curves felt pressed against him. He had zero interest in holding a bag of bones.
The dream shifted.
Jaxson had Phoebe pinned to the bed in a hotel room. This time, there was no knit fabric between them. His palm rested flush against the slight swell of her bare stomach.
Her voice echoed directly into his ear.
She whispered, "You crossed the line, Jaxson."
Outside the window, the rain intensified. A violent crack of thunder jolted Jaxson awake. He stared at the ceiling of his bedroom, his breathing ragged and uneven for a long time.
After a few moments, Jaxson threw off the covers and cursed into the dark.
The sharp spray of the shower echoed from the bathroom.
Stepping out from the freezing water, Jaxson glanced at his phone and saw an anonymous text message.
"Phoebe's husband is Lucas Lennox. Amherst grad. Worked at Vance Corp, disappeared after the bankruptcy."
The suffocating heat he had just drowned out with cold water flared violently in his chest.
For absolutely no reason at all, a crushing wave of exhaustion washed over him.
He sat in his armchair, lit a cigarette, and exhaled. A suffocating tightness coiled around his lungs, making it hard to breathe.
He was overthinking things.
-
Marketing department dinners were a regular occurrence.
They had nailed their previous project, quarterly bonuses had just dropped, and the new big boss, Jaxson, had just officially taken the helm. A celebration was practically mandatory.
Autumn and Phoebe sat together.
Phoebe focused entirely on her food, never looking up, only offering short hums of agreement whenever Autumn spoke to her.
From the day Phoebe joined the company, Autumn knew she was deeply introverted and preferred to stay out of office drama. Whenever the rest of the team gossiped, Phoebe firmly removed herself from the conversation.
But after a few glasses of wine, the table grew bold.
Jane covered her mouth and nodded toward the VIP table. "Hey, do you guys see that? The intern from the secretarial pool hasn't left Mr. Hayes's side all night."
Jaxson and his executive team were at the same dinner, though seated at a comfortably distant table.
Assuming Jaxson couldn't see them, Phoebe and Autumn glanced over.
Jaxson was wearing a deep purple suit that made him look even more intensely aristocratic. He had paired it with a floral shirt for the occasion, lending him a relaxed, effortless vibe, yet it somehow only elevated his untouchable aura.
Seraphina was hovering right behind him, wearing a dress in a matching shade of purple. She held a wine glass, beaming radiantly.
Every so often, she would playfully tug at Jaxson's sleeve, flashing a demure, shy smile.
