Lucas immediately backed down, his voice turning placating. "Okay, okay, you don't have to come. How about I take you and my favorite niece out for dinner, just the three of us? Sound good?"

"Fine." The alcohol was making Phoebe's head swim slightly. She kept her tone strict. "Lucas, don't lie to me."

"I wouldn't dare, princess! It's a date. I'll see you this weekend."

Phoebe hung up the phone and stood outside the restaurant. The warm exhaust from the nearby AC units blew over her face, clearing away some of the alcohol's haze.

Heather Brooks was Lucas's current girlfriend, and back in college, she had been Phoebe's roommate.

During their freshman year, Heather had pretended to be close friends with Phoebe.

Yet she constantly reported Phoebe for skipping classes. That alone was annoying, but manageable.

The breaking point came when Heather spread vicious rumors, framing Phoebe as a rich snob who ruthlessly bullied other students. The lie spiraled out of control, to the point where the supposedly 'bullied' student genuinely believed Phoebe was the one ruining her life.

And why? Because that student had a crush on Jaxson.

Even Jaxson himself had probably assumed Phoebe was secretly terrorizing any girl who dared to look his way.

She had never done anything of the sort.

Jaxson had absolutely no idea that while she acted spoiled, lazy, and completely subservient only to him, she was fundamentally a good person.

She never cared when other girls confessed to him.

In Phoebe's eyes, if those girls were bold enough to shoot their shot, it just proved Jaxson's worth—or it meant Jaxson had given them some form of silent encouragement.

Either way, it wasn't her mess to clean up.

When the bullying accusations blew up, Phoebe had spent a massive amount of time and effort enlisting Lucas's help to dig up the truth, ultimately proving Heather was the mastermind behind the entire smear campaign.
