Phoebe's expression remained perfectly calm.
“Even if she really is Mr. Hayes's woman, on paper, she's still an intern in our department. We just follow standard protocol. If Mr. Hayes wants to give her a free pass, that's entirely out of our hands.”
Her voice was steady.
Not a single ripple of emotion—just her usual objective, neutral self.
Autumn felt a sudden wave of solidarity. “You're so right. These insanely rich guys probably have a dozen women lined up. I even saw Audrey Miller from Planning going into the CEO's office around noon. I heard she and Mr. Hayes were college classmates.”
Jane cranked up the intensity on her neck massager and let out a snarky laugh. “Audrey? No wonder she broke up with her boyfriend so suddenly a couple of days ago. She just locked onto a better target.”
Autumn clicked her tongue in amusement.
Her hand cheekily reached out to poke Phoebe's slender waist. She sighed in awe—how was it fair that they all ate the exact same food, sometimes Autumn even ate less, but Phoebe maintained this impossibly tiny waist?
Looking down at her own post-pregnancy stomach, Autumn lamented, “Phoebe, how is your waist so tiny? And your curves are stunning! If I were your husband, I'd want you every single night.”
Jane chimed in, “Get out of here, like you'd ever have a chance! I'm in love with Phoebe too!”
The married women in the office all erupted into laughter.
Autumn was laughing so hard there were tears in her eyes.
Phoebe took a sip of water, staring at her monitor, silently apologizing to her nonexistent husband.
“Men hit twenty-five and their stamina drops to that of a fifty-two-year-old. Doesn't matter what they want.”
While it was a slight exaggeration, most of the women at Hayes Corporation were married to guys working crazy hours at massive tech firms. Realistically, they were all too exhausted to have much of a sex life anyway.
But hearing Phoebe casually declare that her husband was lacking in the stamina department still made a few female colleagues turn their heads in surprise.
Phoebe hadn't looked up yet when Jane's voice suddenly went terrifyingly formal.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Hayes.”
The lively, joking atmosphere in the office instantly plummeted to absolute zero.
A harsh, rigid line formed at the corner of Jaxson's mouth. He pressed his lips together, staring directly at Phoebe. “Where is your intern?”
Phoebe understood instantly.
They hadn't crossed paths once since the night he gave her a ride in the storm.
