Runaway Mommy: My Boss is the Father novel Chapter 26

Phoebe placed some sautéed greens into Mrs. Lennox's bowl.

"Mom, you're looking at me through rose-tinted glasses. How am I a catch? I'm dragging around a kid and drowning in debt."

"There are complications with your dad's company funds that you don't need to worry about right now. I'm not dead yet."

Phoebe paused. "Complications?"

Her father's company had run into issues before he passed, but since it happened exactly when his terminal cancer took a turn for the worse, Phoebe had been running around desperately seeking medical help, leaving no time to deal with the corporate fallout.

Mrs. Lennox nodded but kept the details to herself.

Her daughter was already exhausted juggling work and taking care of them. Phoebe had never been involved in the family business anyway, so dumping this information on her now would only add to her stress.

Mrs. Lennox wanted to handle those matters herself.

She was determined to hold on long enough to leave some sort of nest egg for her daughter and granddaughter.

"Don't worry about it," Mrs. Lennox said vaguely. "Just eat your dinner, and be a good girl—go on a blind date this weekend!"

Phoebe rolled her eyes internally.

All that build-up was just a segue to force her into a weekend blind date.

"If worse comes to worst, what about that boyfriend of yours from college? Could you find him?"

Her college boyfriend.

That was exclusively Jaxson.

Phoebe faked a heavy sigh. "He's probably married by now. The world is huge, Mom. Where would I even start looking?"

"None of your classmates have his contact info? I refuse to believe a girl as pretty as you can't land a boyfriend!"

Phoebe teased, "Mom, with my baggage, I can only score a divorced guy with kids. Would you really be okay with that?"

Mrs. Lennox was absolutely not okay with that.

In her eyes, her daughter was still a single, highly eligible woman. Yes, she had Lily, but Lily was so sweet and adorable—she was the only thing that had kept their spirits alive over the past few years.

If this precious new life hadn't arrived exactly when Edward passed away, Mrs. Lennox honestly believed she would have given up and joined her husband.

If Phoebe actually married a divorced man with his own kids, what if they bullied Lily?

Just the thought made Mrs. Lennox shake her head violently.

"Absolutely not!"

Phoebe watched her mother, feeling a mix of amusement and a lingering ache in her chest.

Growing up, she had never been close to Mrs. Lennox.
