Pain-2
As she sat there, Kaia found herself absentmindedly caressing Asher’s hair. For the first time in a
long while, the constant pain that had been her companion began to fade. She watched his peaceful face, feeling a warmth she hadn’t known in years.
Asher stirred slightly, mumbling in his sleep, and his grip on her dress tightened. Kaia’s heart ached
with an unfamiliar tenderness. She hadn’t realized how much she missed feeling connected to
someone, especially family.
Time seemed to stand still as she sat with Asher, the gentle breeze rustling the leaves above
them. For this brief moment, Kaia allowed herself to feel something other than sorrow. She closed her eyes, taking in the tranquility of the garden and the warmth of Asher’s presence, and for the
first time in a long time, she felt a break from her constant pain.
Kaia’s moment of peace was abruptly interrupted by the distant sound of panicked voices. She stiffened, her body tensing as she heard her brother’s authoritative tone break through her mind
link barriers, something she hadn’t experienced in years.
“Has anyone seen Asher?” Azriel’s voice boomed through the pack’s mental link, filled with urgency
and worry.
Kaia’s heart pounded as she realized the gravity of the situation. Despite her long isolation, she knew she had to respond. Gathering her strength, she opened the link and replied, “He’s with me in the garden.”
There was a moment of stunned silence before Azriel’s disbelieving voice echoed back, “Kaia?”
“Yes,” she confirmed, her voice trembling slightly.
Within moments, she saw her brother entering the garden, his steps cautious and his expression a
mix of surprise and relief. He was followed closely by a beautiful short blonde woman with striking
green eyes, eyes that Kaia immediately recognized as being the same as Asher’s.
Azriel approached her slowly, his gaze never leaving her face. “Kaia,” he greeted in a low voice, filled with a mix of emotions. “What happened to Asher?”
Kaia swallowed hard, feeling the weight of the moment. “He fell asleep while playing in the garden,” she replied in a very low voice, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her.
Azriel’s eyes softened as he looked at his sister, not believing that she was replying to him, but he quickly turned his attention to his son. He bent down and gently checked Asher, who was still sleeping peacefully in Kaia’s arms. Seeing that he was safe and unharmed, Azriel let out a sigh of
relief.

The blonde woman stepped forward, her eyes filled with concern. “Thank you, Kaia,” she said softly.
her voice warm and kind. “I’m Lora, Asher’s mother.”
Kaia nodded, her heart aching with a mixture of fear and pain. She had avoided this kind of interaction for so long, but now, faced with her brother and his family, she felt a flicker of something she hadn’t felt in years; connection.
Azriel stood up and looked at Kaia, his expression serious yet gentle. “Kaia, I’ve missed you,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “Asher has been telling us about his new friend, but we never expected…
Kaia lowered her eyes, her emotions threatening to overwhelm her. “I didn’t want to cause any
trouble,” she said quietly. “But… he kept on coming and … he fell asleep.”
Azriel stepped closer, and with a trembling voice he replied to her, “You’re not causing trouble,” he said softly. “We’re family. And it seems Asher has already decided you’re his friend.”
Lora smiled warmly, nodding in agreement. “He’s right, Kaia. Asher kept on talking about his new
friend.”
Kaia felt tears welling up in her eyes as she looked at her brother and his mate. For the first time in
a long time, she communicated with someone and, looking at the loving look from her brother’s eyes, she realized that, despite the pain that she would cause him when she would leave this world, at least he had someone to help him bounce back.
With a trembling voice, she told him that she needed to leave, before untangling herself from Asher’s grip and running inside the house.
Once inside, she started sobbing in pain, while waves of heartbreak were lashing her chest.
