Pain-1

In the days that followed, Asher’s visits to Kaia became a routine. Each afternoon, he would arrive

at the sage-walled house, clutching a different sweet treat for his newfound aunt. Kaia would sit

quietly in the garden, her eyes filled with a mixture of pain and happiness, while Asher played

around her, his mischievous antics a welcome distraction.

Kaia watched the young pup with a heart that ached yet felt a flicker of warmth. She couldn’t

believe that her brother had a son so big and full of life. When Azriel had told her a few weeks back that he had found his second chance mate, she had dismissed it as a ruse to coax her out of her

isolation. The word “mate” itself was enough to send shivers of agony through her, the memories

of her rejection still raw and bleeding within her.

The nightmares were relentless. On some nights, she relived the moment her fated mate had

looked at her with disdain, declaring her unworthy, a mistake of the Moon Goddess … damaged goods. On some other nights, she dreams about her parent’s death and her brutal r**e, before getting disfigured. The emotional wounds were deep, festering with every passing day. There were times when she considered ending her suffering, to finally find peace and escape the constant torment; the pain was just too great. But the thought of Azriel, her dear brother who had already endured so much, held her back. He had lost their parents, his first mate, and their unborn child. She couldn’t bear to add to his pain by leaving him behind.

Yet, seeing Asher brought a glimmer of hope. At least, if she leaves this world now, he will have support. The boy was a living testament to Azriel’s resilience and newfound happiness. Asher’s laughter and joy were infectious, and despite herself, Kaia found moments of reprieve from her sorrow in his presence. She often found herself lost in thought, pondering whether Azriel’s mate could truly bring him the comfort and joy he deserved.

One afternoon, as Asher played with a wooden toy he had brought along, Kaia’s mind drifted back

to her brother’s words about his new mate. Perhaps, if Azriel had indeed found happiness, she

could allow herself to hope for some semblance of peace after this life. She felt it deep in her

bones that she was perishing, her spirit weakening each day. Even her wolf, once a fierce presence

in her mind, had withdrawn into a corner, too broken to emerge. She couldn’t blame her wolf; the

pain and horrors they had endured were simply too great.

Asher’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Auntie Kaia, look! I made a flower crown for you!” He held up a delicate chain of flowers, his eyes shining with pride.

Kaia smiled, a rare and genuine expression. “Thank you, Asher. It’s beautiful.” She took the flower crown and placed it on her head, feeling a strange sense of comfort.

Asher’s curiosity finally bubbled. “Auntie Kaia, why do you hide your face?” he asked, his innocent

Kaia hesitated, her heart heavy with the weight of her past. After a moment of silence, she replied

softly, “I got hurt, Asher. The sight isn’t pleasant.”

Asher’s face brightened with a cheerful smile. “But my mommy is a doctor! She can help you.”

Kaia’s smile was tinged with sadness. “No one can help me, Asher,” she murmured, her voice barely

above a whisper.

She sat in the garden, lost in her thoughts after the short exchange, when she suddenly realized it was too silent. Perhaps Asher had left, but it wasn’t like him to go without saying goodbye. Panic pricked at her as she scanned the garden. To her relief, she found the little boy asleep in the swing, the sun casting a warm glow over his small form.

Kaia watched him for a moment, her heart softening at the sight. Slowly, she approached and gently caressed his face, marveling at how much he resembled her brother. Realizing the sun was too bright and that he might get sunburned, she hesitated before carefully lifting him into her

arms.

She carried him to a shaded garden couch under a tree, intending to lay him down, but as she tried to settle him, his small hands grabbed her dress in his sleep, refusing to let go. Kaia sighed in annoyance but also felt a strange sense of comfort. She had no choice but to sit next to him, his tiny body nestled against hers.
